Being in the habit of always paying our respects to the village war memorial wherever we go has brought home to us just how many men did die on the Italian front. Around here, even in what were even then small villages with a population, say, of a few hundred, the list often runs in to dozens. Makes you wonder about the impact this massive loss of life must have had on the small farming communities so reliant on the male workforce.
Another interesting book that I've just finished is The Imperial War Museum's book of the War in Italy 1943/45 written by Field Marshal Lord Carver. The chapter on the "push on to Florence" was fascinating and had us driving all over the countryside to find the villages mentioned. And many villages in Tuscany still have annual re-enactments of the battles or celebrate the day on which they were liberated.

Another book to add to the list is "Italy's Sorrow" by James Holland. Have not actually read it myself, OH has as well as several friends all of whom raved about it.
