But, Sally, I only recommend Illy where it is not possible to grind one's own beans, as we do at home, due to travelling.
We actually use a coffee called "Caffè Mito - Crema Bar"*, packed by Torrefattori Associati S.p.A. in Allesandria. Very good it is too!
*non e molto caro!

Lavazza Oro also

I don't know if you have a Gulliver anywhere near you over there, Phil, but have a look for it if you do. It's a lot cheaper than the Lavazza and tastes very good as well.

sounds like a top-tip, there is a Gulliver in Nizza (and I am only 20 km from Alessandria!) - thanks
Nardini recommends Illy as does an Italian friend of mine. (Arabic Roast) J+C, Kimbo, (which I see is from Naples). Which one do you adore and make in your espresso machine???
My wife tells me, it's gotta be Kimbo & I'd be a fool to disagree..........that or sleeping on the settee :laughs:

My favourite is produced by the Tazza d'oro in Rome (just off the piazza by the Pantheon) but you can get it elsewhere but not in the UK. I am finding Illy much more readily available in UK.

Yes you can buy Illy in Waitrose and Wholefoods in London.

Must be 100% Arabica so Illy & Lavazza Oro are the ones I go for when in need of a pick me up espresso made in my Bialetti Moka.

There's an old idiom in Naples which should be completed when someone familiar asks you "com'e' il caffe?"
Does anyone know the correct reply?

I kept a copy of this Guardian article by Tobias Jones on the 2006 election:
If high politics often seems strangely apolitical, everyday life is extraordinarily politicised. You can tell someone's politics by the strangest things: which football team they support; which coffee they drink (the Illy brand has leftwing connotations as its owner, the president of the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region, Riccardo Illy, is part of the centre-left alliance); which books they read (Tolkien was, during the 1970s, an unlikely icon of the fascist movement); even which shoes they wear (Tods shoes are made by Diego Della Valle, the owner of Fiorentina football team and vociferous critic of Berlusconi). In a country in which politics is so often conducted through symbolism and gesture, there's a kind of livery that allows you to recognise, almost on first acquaintance, someone's political sympathies.
So if Illy is Socialist coffee, what do Berlusconi supporters favour?
