Get a Tom tom and you will be amazed how many there actually are here. Very hard to spot unless you have help.

And don't think that they aren't working. I got caught by one a couple of years ago - a Autovelox mobile camera operated by the local vigili (polizia locale) - sorry Markcarter, but it wouldn't have been on your Tom Tom! The only advice worth passing one (it didn't work for me though) is to ask for a copy of the photograph and the test certificate for the actual camera in use. I know some people who managed to get the fine set aside by that approach, so it's worth a go.

What are the chances of getting caught if yoyu have a uk number plate?
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
The same. They do follow it up, especially if you are well over the limit.

They will track the owner by the registration, so with a foreign or rental tag you still won't get out of it. The big problem with these is the ticket may not arrive in the mail until several months later.:veryconfused: Then you have to remember when you were in that location. The newspapers will list each day where the mobile units are being set-up on the autostrada and SS roads.

This subject has been aired before and I believe I read that the Tuscans employ an agency in England to chase for the payment of traffic fines, owed to them by English drivers? My OH's fine in our Italian car, was dated May and arrived at our Italian home in September.

Hi Noble
Maybe you should have asked your OH to collect it, .........you would have got it quicker................( sorry to easy a target ) :laughs::laughs:

Well the length of time it took to arrive has certainly made a few of our friends that drove to and from Pisa this summer, rather nervous!

This info is from a Telegraph article, relating to the chasing up of fines in the EU.
*
There have been items in the news recently about tracking down driving offenders between European countries. It sounds like a nice little earner: note details of a British car visiting your country, wait a few weeks until it returns to the UK, trace the keeper/driver with the new Euro-friendly co-operation, and send them a bill for a fine for a trivial or difficult-to-prove driving offence. Make the amount big enough to be worth collecting, but not big enough that it’s worth spending money challenging. Presumably the DVLA will help (by suspending the driver’s licence) if the keeper/driver won’t play ball.
C.D., Essex
They are heavily into this in Italy already. The French have been relative gents, so far. Another unforeseen consequences of EC harmony.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
I am a resident in Sicily and live 52 weeks a year here I got a speeding fine from a autovelox this year and it took 2 months to arrive, which I payed promptly at the post office. Luckily no points:yes: I still have an English licence, does the tracking down driving offenders between European countries also put points on your licence?, or vice versa take them off from the Italian licence?:Dancing_confused:

What are these and how do they work ?

Hello,
Just a quick reply.
Having seen the new speed camera boxes being installed recently along the Sarnano to Macerata road of Le Marche I must admit i was a little dismayed to see
Big Brother arriving here too, that was until a while back I saw 2 of the boxes had been burnt until they resembled a large lump of melted plastic on the ground. I did have a slightly board grin of pride for the Italian who did that.
By the way I don't know if you know, but they don't as a rule install the cameras as they cost to much to replace. So they are stored by the Vigile and mounted whilst they are there. When finished they remove the cameras to avoid them being broken.
My point being that if you see a Vigiles car next one of the cameras it means that its active, if not your pretty safe, but don't take my word!!!!!!!!

There are orange ones as well Angie, in the first village just outside Sarnano, as well as a few other places along that road. I saw the blue ones on the road to Corridonia from Piederipa. Perhaps they are trying to confuse us all:no:
There also seems to be an Autovelox set up in the roadworks on the Ancona motorway.

Ok, I just received a speeding violation in the mail, today 13/12/08. The alledged speeding occurred on 1/10/08, just outside Rieti, going (horrors!!) 76 kmh in a 60kmh zone. 161 euro fine. It also says there will be five points. How can points be assessed if they haven't pulled you over? Our car is in my name only, so if my husband is driving, I'll rack up his points??? This can't be right. Can I appeal? Anybody know who has best deal on TomTom? Might not pick all the cameras up, but any little bit would help!!! 161 euros!! Give me a break!! The sad thing is I have tried very hard to follow speed limits that are posted, but a lot of the time, I can't even find a posted speed limit. And 60 kmh? Most places it is 50kmh in towns and 70 kmh outside on country roads. Gee, what a great way to generate income for the local commune!! Sorry for venting, I feel better now!!

yes,i got it, same place, same fine it was euro 148 then ,i see it's gone up,same five points (i now only have eight left) i wrote them a registered letter to complain/block it ,nothing, don't even reply, now i no longer use the via salaria to go to Roma but the A.24 -TERAMO-AQUILA-ROMA its 60k longer but decidedly faster without this s++t.

If it had been either the 50kph or 70kph limit - you were still speeding!
Be philosophical about it -
you were speeding [or your OH was] - you were caught - you pay the price - from now on, perhaps you slow down?
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
bloops - 76kph in a 60 zone? You were only 16 kph over the limit (only 12 kph over the 'adjusted' limit to allow for errors) - shouldn't it be two points? Probably they have changed things since I last got booked, but I thought up to 20kph over was two points, and more than 20kph over was four points. (Though if sebastiano says five points I'll defer to his greater experience of speeding!!)
It's the driver, rather than the car, who gets the fine. If the driver has a UK licence just supply the photocopy of the UK licence to the vigili, pay the fine, and hope that nothing will come of the points.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
If it is the driver who gets the fine, and it's from a speed camera, how do they know who is driving? Do they actually get a picture of the driver, and if so, how do they know the car hasn't been lent to another person? Anyway, my drivers license is from USA, so I guess the points may be a non issue, at least on this ticket.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
I don't accept the argument that if you stick to speed limits, you don't get punished. It is virtually impossible to observe speed limits, both here and th UK, because they change so often, and as someone else said, they are inadequately posted. The result is that in the UK hundreds of thousands of people have in effect been criminalised by a lazy form of policing.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
.........The result is that in the UK hundreds of thousands of people have in effect been criminalised by a lazy form of policing.
No - I think you'll find they've been criminalised by a lazy form of driving.
.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
bloops - what happens is that the avviso goes to the registered proprietor of the vehicle, who then is given the opportunity to tell the authorities who was behind the wheel, and present a photocopy of the driver's licence. I wouldn't worry about the points on a US licence....(though can you drive on one of those here in Italy? - I suppose for a limited period it must be okay).
And yes, frequently the photos are clear enough to at least identify that it is a man, or a person with a beard, or a woman with a girly hairstyle driving!
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Charles, you have obviously not seen my neighbour Mario when he comes back from the village barbers, a popular style around here for the older man is a sort of blue rinsed bouffant affair. That will fool those cameras!

.

Wouldn't know any more probably. I haven't lived there for 5 years and I've never been done for speeding
Thanks Jimmy. I had a feeling they didn't flash.
There was a horrible one near Luton airport I remember many years ago. It was forward facing and flashed right in your face leaving you unable to see where you were going afterwards for a few seconds. Really safe!!
My husband's friend used to be in the traffic police and now makes his living checking people's convictions for speeding as a lot of the time, the council or police haven't complied with their own laws. Great website called Get Justice

I was just wondering about these cameras because I've been driving down to Puglia on a once or twice yearly basis for a few years now and I always see these 'things' on the A14 which sort of look like cameras but I cant decide if they really are or not. Dimensionally they are flat faced...almost 2 dimensional looking, and seem to come in 2 different colours (orange and green if memory serves correctly). I try to keep my speed at about a maximum of around 90mph wherever I can - but not on the curves - and always with safety in mind, and very often I find myself going at about 60 or less. I've never bothered trying to slow down when I spot these things and that's why I wondered about them in the first place as I've never received any kind of ticket or fine. Having said that though, I never get much above 90 and there are many many Italians who just go sailing past me as If I was a real slowcoach so maybe the cameras don't kick in until somewhere over the 90mph mark...??

In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Thanks for that link Alan. Looking at the little map it would seem that there are very few cameras along the A14 but I think I'll maybe drop my maximum speed to around 85mph to stay within the 5% tolerance limit.

I am sorry to say that Sicily does have Speed cameras, the one that got me in the Graniti area looked like an old rusty brown box. My TomTom alerted me to the first two, but I did not recognise them and went too fast on the third 83Km/h in a 70 Km/h speed zone and a €51.60 fine.:reallyembarrassed: The thing was it would be reckless do 70 past the first two in such a built up area, but as it exited the town it went into a clear wide road and that is where it got me no flash so I was surprised when it arrived Luckily no points. Be warned anyone going to the Gola Alcantara through the commune di Graniti watch your speed.:wideeyed:
