Thanks for your reply. You are correct about driving an EU car for a year in Italy. Also, if you stay driving in Italy for over 1 year, you are obliged to have an International Driver's licence, not just your own and I think!! you may then have to apply for 1 of the 2 types of residencies that they have for us imports!
Be careful with your car insurance too. If youve it insured from your country of residence, they may have a feild day with you in the event of a claim as you'll have had the car out of the country for so long. Try to take out Italian insurance.

Not necessary to take out italian car insurance, Italsure will ensure expats living in Italy with italian cars - fully comprehensive policy at better prices than you can get in Italy. And the policy is in both english and italian so if your italian is not up to legal docs then that helps .......

There is usually an advert for them on the home page of the Italy Mag site - the one with the red, green and white umberella. They are UK based.

A friend of ours is currently making a claim for a stolen car. Initital 30 day wait required by the insurers to make sure the car is not found/returned! That period has passed, now we are waiting to see how long the claim takes to be settled. Will let you know

Stolen car claim was settled for book value after a 30 or 60 day wait period (can't remember which) to see if the car was recovered. Needless to say the book value was nowhere near what was paid for the car but unfortunately that's the way it goes with write-offs / stolen vehicles.
You do need residency to buy an Italian car, don't you?
When I move to Italy, I've considered "importing" an EU-registered car, which I believe you can drive for a year on the original plates before you're required to reregister it. One less complication at the time of the big move!
