Try the Travelodge at Great Dunmow - all rooms are en-suite, a decent size, clean & non-smoking. No singles but you pay for the room not per person so no single supplement. Rooms are available from £29 a night but you can be lucky and get them on offer for £19. It is possible to book a taxi to do the airport run, approx £12 and 10-15 mins max depending upon time of day. We have stayed there a few times and have never had any complaints. There is a restaurant but have never tried it.

Don't go back to uk if I can help it, but if I do we always stay at the De salis (5 mins from airport) clean, comfortable, reasonably priced and a brill restaurant half Italian half Indian.
As it's run by a couple of Indian guys and I live in Italy I always go for the Indian menu and the food is fantastic, airport taxi about £8 I think.
The Reviews weren't good, sorry!

I greatly appreciate the replies as I was trying to get someone to give me a personal raccomanda. The place above sadly has some recent iffy reviews, but as you don't go very often perhaps it's been a while since you stayed there.

Hi Noble
Try these!!!
Italianish family. Both Mum and Dad and Daughter and son in law have a B & B near the airport. They will pick you up from Stansted, take you back to the airport - even for an early Ryanair flight and give you a breakfast pack. Plus, they will take you to the local pub for a great supper.
They looked after me very well last year, stayed there after I had just buried my Mum and they were so nice to me. If they dont have room they know of others.

0044 1279 758278 for Paula, or 0044 1279 503957 for Pauline and Ricco Biondi, the Mum and Dad.
Last year I paid £45 for all the above service (not including supper) for a single room per night.
If you look on the website, the first name on the links tab. is Latchmere and that is daughter Paula's place.
Good Luck

We also stayed at De Salis anytime we go through Stanstead airport. The last time we staid was July. It is very friendly, comfortable and the collection and delivery to and from the airport is excellent. They also have free internet which was great for printing on- line boarding passes for our beloved Ryanair. We haven't tried the dinner but the breakfast was grand . The only down side was the bathrooms were in need of a little updating but as we just wanted somewhere to lay our heads it was perfect.

Noble, the airport is open throughout the night and if you arrive early enough you can grab a bench. I only suggest this as an absolute last resort of course.

Thanks Sally. I have a friend aged 60 who always sleeps at Stansted prior to boarding the early morning flight to Perugia. She says that there are quite a few people travelling early to Eastern Europe and so there is a group of sleepers and it is very quiet and pleasant. As I go to England only once a year I prefer to sleep in a bed. I am now sorted but I am sure others will benefit from these posts.
Hi Noble
