10930 Calabria in April

Hi,

We are looking into the possibility of going to Calabria in early April. We are thinking of going to the Tropea area as it is quite early in the year, and thought more of the sights, restaurants, bars etc would be open to take our money - so how "open" is the area, at this time of year

We would also like to know what the weather is usually like this time of year?

Thanks for any advice

Chris

We have yet to stay in April, but have stayed in March and the weather then was in the high teens, with some rain. As you would expect when the sun shone it was quite warm, but evenings were cool.

As far as bars and restaurants are concerned there are a nucleus of restaurants which remain open throughout the winter, but they tend to be at the upper end of the quality and price (relative) scales. The number of bars is reduced dramatically and those that open may do so only at the weekend and close earlier that during the summer.

All in all it is still worth going and is made more pleasant when the sun shines.

We stayed in Tropea in mid April last year, and in the centre of the town it was reasonably lively, with a good choice of bars and restaurants open. Weatherwise it was warm enough to eat breakfast outside, and have a late evening drink on a bar terrace, but you needed a light jacket.

The coastal bit of Tropea hadn't really opened at all (though there were probably some bars open at the weekends). I really don't know whether Tropea is any more 'year round' than some of the other older coastal towns in Calabria, but it is a nice place! We drove around a great deal, and everything in the way of 'monuments', galleries, was open, usually (we were surprised to find) staying open over lunchtime.
