10938 Autumn is the best planting time.

I was reminded of an excellent planting tip. Planting anything in Italy, where soil dries out easily, particularly trees, shrubs, and climbers near a wall, it can be hard work watering. So when you first plant, put several sheets of soaked newspaper into the base of the planting hole, with some soil on top. The paper will act like a wick and stops the water disappearing too fast.

Brilliant tip, thank you! Speaking as one just about to plant a rose in a very dry Le Marche, I will take your advice to heart.

Interestingly, my husband's dad used to do this apparently but in Norfolk, not Italy. Just goes to show the old ways are often the best!

Norfolk is one of the dryest parts of England and anything that grows there can usually be planted here in Italy. If you are planting roses, see my comments in the Forums Gardening Group. I have not found anything as good as Bayer Top Rose, so bring some to Italy if you can, to feed roses next spring.
