10993 Late December/New Year in ITaly

Hi! Any suggestions for a place to go and spend time after Xmas to day after new year, gladly received. Havent even decided 'where' in Italy yet; just today, got the idea to go out there with a friend, to get away from England and have a lovely time! We Like atmosphere, cosiness, the bonhommie of italians, beautiful surroundings, tradition, and not the drunkeness prevalent in English towns at that time of year. Would prefer a warm b and b or hotel. Any experiences? Last year we went to Languedoc in France and froze in the b and b...so would like to not repeat that!

oops hit grazie instead of quick reply but never mind. Atmosphere and cosiness are not two words which sum up our area south of rome during the period you mention. Love new year's eve but we spend it in a restaurant run by friends and meet up with lots of other friends. The first place that came to mind for me was Ticino in Switzerland - the Italian speaking canton but perhaps forum members in Nothern Italy know of cosy warm places for those winter days - you could I suppose head right down South where you possibly won't need cosiness and warmth

mmmm thanks for that....don't mind the cold outside so long as the house is warm- nice roaring fire would work in a fairly non draughty small house. Any one got one to rent , perhaps over that period, if no suggestions for b and b hotels? Love La Marche; Urbino area; And Umbria.Like to be near interesting towns with lovely restaurants and atmosphere!

Yes, northern mountainous parts spring to mind for cosiness and atmosphere, but I would also advise Siena - I lived there several years so I am biased but although I usually went back to the UK for christmas I did spend it there one year and it was magical. The lights are beautiful, there is such a wonderful atmosphere and lots of cosy trattorias in the city itself and surrounding areas - lovely walks in the countryside too.
