I read this article o ANSA yesterday and again on Reuter today.

Italian Party To Pay For Babies Named After Mussolini

An Italian right-wing party is offering 1,500 euros (1,271 pounds) to parents who name their babies after wartime fascist dictator Benito Mussolini or his wife Rachele, saying their names are under threat. Skip related content

The MSI-Fiamma Tricolore party, the descendant of Mussolini's fascist party, said the initiative in the poor, southern region of Basilicata was meant to keep alive names "at risk of extinction" and pay tribute to the movement's roots.

"Benito and Rachele are nice names and I hope our original initiative will get people going," party official Vincenzo Mancusi told Reuters.

The bonus -- intended to pay for baby clothes and food -- applies to babies born in 2009 in five villages where the birth rate is especially low, Mancusi said.

Mussolini ruled from 1922 to 1943 when he was ousted after leading Italy to ruin by entering World War Two as an ally of Germany. He was executed along with his mistress Claretta Petacci in 1945. His widow Rachele died in 1979.

Well I read this one (below) and it made a far greater impression on me than some hair brained scheme to shell out £1271 to attention seeking parents to name their sons Benito...

Now Italian teenagers stoop to the depths of wickedness and depravity too.

Perhaps someone should take one of their 'loved ones' and do the same to them! Then tell them - "it was just a bit of fun!"

Reading about such wicked behaviour makes me totally ashamed to be included as a member of the human race.

Actually, the same incident but in this case the victim was a woman happened in Spain a couple of years ago. It was worse because the woman died. The security cameras of the bank where the woman was trying to sleep during a cold night picked up everything and they were arrested, the three of them, one was a minor at the time of the crime. The Court has just condemned them to long sentences even if they argued that they were drunk at the time and did not know what they were doing and that they are very sorry about their actions......

Whilst I agree that setting fire to homeless people is shocking, the initial thread started by Sally also made headline news on BBC News on line, and I would have posted it myself if Sal hadnt got there first. and I am sure others members found it of interest as well, and it encouraged them to read the articles themself. This forum is about all aspects of life in Italy not just the horrific, but the seemingly silly as well.I wonder how many takers there will be for the scheme.
