I am thinking of a short break over the 2nd weekend in Feb flying in to verona or venice and driving up to Trento. My query is car hire and the suitability of driving around at that time of year. When driving in the past I have noticed road signs showing chains on tyres. Is this a legal requirement or just advising of possible road conditions?.I realise its the million dollar question but are the roads likely to be accesible or am I asking for trouble?.My other option is taking the train but I would prefer to drive if possible, any advice welcome

Trento - you should have chains and it is often a legal requirement, depending on the weather. You really do need to have all-weather tyres ( impossible on a hire car) or chains which you can probably hire with the car. Happy holidays! Remember the week of 23rd Feb is Carnavale, great fun, but could be busy.
