It works just like a debit card (except when shopping online re above) and many Italian shops will accept Bancomat when they won't accept a credit card.

These cards have a spending limit on them, when you use them in a store. I can't remember if it a per transaction limit, or a per day limit. Mine is good only for transactions under €800.

Has anyone tried to get sums larger than 250 euros at a time from a bancomat? If so, did you have to go inside the bank and present the card? Were there additional fees above what would be normally charged at the bancomat window? When we stay at agriturismos, most don't take credit cards and we have had to resort to inserting the card several times in a row to get the required cash.

You put your card into the cashpoint (hopefully the cash dispenser will have sufficient money in it!!!) Then punch in your pin and then you select Prelievo da Conto and then type in the amount you want. Max is 1500 euros a day with our banking group.

Hi Noble,
Thanks for responding. We have always notified our bank in the States and requested an increase to about 1500 euros a day, typed in the amount requested but still never been given more than 250 euros at any machine anywhere in Italy except at Fiumicino Airport. It is very frustrating!

Ah...not clear when you asked the original question Lisa C.
But if you have an ordinary Italian bank account and have money in it, you can certainly draw out more than 250 euros a day. We are English and opened an Italian bank account where our bank permits us to remove 1500 euros a day (if it's in the right mood of course!). Not sure what type of account you have?

Hi Noble,
I'm sorry I should have explained our situation better. We still live in the US and do not have an Italian bank account yet. We use an ATM debit card from our bank (which can also be used as a credit card) to get cash out of the bancomat when we travel. Our bank lets us take out 1500 euros a day but the bancomat won't comply. Hope this helps!
Lisa
Yes you can use it in store, but unlike a credit card it cannot be used on the internet.
