3 need to get elected by draw end of may:

Remaining contradas for draw:

From the 7 contrada's who will run 'by right', 4 have there own jockey's. Mean's they have an agreement with a jockey that he will ride for them, and not do business by his own.
The contrada are:
Pantera - jockey Brio / Giraffa - jockey Dè / Selva - jockey Sgaibarre / Leocorno . jockey Scompiglio

Only Istrice, Aquila and Torre don't have there own jockey and will probably need to wait until end of may when the draw is hold, for the 3 remaining spot's.

A big rivalry is allready on the track: Pantera-Aquila !

That's it for now.

Ciao !

Ciao a tutti

Siena wakes up with the first contrada doing her annual parade. It will be the Valdimontone contrada celebrating her protector, with a parade, the baptism of the new members, great dinners at night and music. After that every contrada will do there parades ending in Septmber with the parade of the Aquila contrada.
Finally we are back alive and also the Palio is coming closer and closer....

Un saluto a tutti voi

I love Siena, but as a foreigner, I've always felt that I shouldn't take sides among the contrade. Tempting as it is to pick a favourite!

there is nothing wrong picking a favorite one.. - the point is that many tourist don't see the importance of the palio for the local people. some even mean that it is a tourist attraction. if every tourist would join the palio with 'disctance' and respect there would be less problems.

Istrice won the july-palio 2008

Yesterday the 3 contrada's got elected for the Palio dell'Assunta on august 16th.
Bruco, Valdimontone and Drago will join
Aquila, Tartuca, Torre , Nicchio, Pantera, Selva and Oca :nah:.
Particular that we will see exactly the same 10 like in august 2006 and that exactly the same 3 got elected like in august 2007. By the way the 4 'greens' will be in. Oca, Drago, Bruco and Selva. That means usually that we well see an exciting race.

Anyway, I love the idea of coming to Siena con i miei amici andiamo a rilassarci, eating McDonalds in Piazza del Campo, waving flags for every different Contrada while wearing a sings on our heads with a banner that says "sono Inglese" - just to make you hop with rage and get you all fired up! :laughs:
You seem to be a funny person juliancoll. In Siena a person like you would be called gazziloro. But in this time it needs more to fire me up. We have other problems to solve. First of all to vote YES or NO no the extraordinary palio in one week. If YES you would have three chances to come to Siena and act like you described. And then I will be there, fired up right in front of you. We'll see if you still laughs then........ :winki: kidding.
Ciao !

Not that I want to increase the temperature here - but what about this: "Ascoli even has the yearly Joust of the Quintana with the same pageantry and excitement that Siena's palio provides. All at far lower prices with fewer crowds it is Tuscany thirty years ago." GoNOMAD--Learning Italian in Ascoli

Go Marche ........

Since a few days a voice is going around in Siena, that people in Wales will organize a horserace based on the Palio-rules in Siena.

BBC NEWS | UK | Wales | Talks on controversial horse race

That's what happens, thanks to international-tv-cover, using the Palio as a tourist-magnet and by inviting international guests to watch the race from a window, just to impress them, and to use that day for private business.

People in Siena are getting angry about this situation. But thats the way it is now. All with cell-phone-video's, cell-phone-digital-camera's, youtube and so on....and the Palio suffer's more then it helps.

Hope they will cancel the project and especially stop using a 500-year-old tradition from Siena, to make money out of it in England.

I also found a forum were they discuss that. They also speak about a Palio-Tour. But I can tell you that Siena has nothing to do with this idea. They just copy the race-style and from my point of view that's more then wrong.

Here also the link to that forum: The Palio .. in Wales? - Chronicle Forums

Same pageantry ? Same excitment ? Lower price ? :nah:

There is plenty of 'festivals' or 'palios' in Italy. You will find different traditions and parades all over the italian boot.
But oviously the own one is always the best one if you ask locals.
There is city's they brought back there 'Palio' for toursit reasons. Bad call.
But in Siena the Palio was always there. It never stopped beside the worldwars and the rules are still the same ones. So the Palio in Siena will always be the 1st.
But I'm not sayind that other festivals in Italy can't be nice to see.

last night the palio was presented. who will win it ? we will know on july 2 !

Elefante, I would not worry about this. Siena's Palio cannot be replaced, not even copied. Any imitation could never have the same atmosphere, tradition, feeling.... It is unique.
They can build replicas of the Vatican, Pompei or the Leaning Tower. They will be fakes and most people will keep on dreaming to see the real thing.
Perhaps Siena and the Palio have suffered recently because of the current economic circumstances. This is happening everywhere. But they will survive.

ci siamo....one week away from the provenzano palio.
lot of voices about strategy, and rumours....but that's palio.
this week the horses will go through the veterinary check up, the track will be prepared, and end of this week the palio-banner will be presented by the major.
on saturday 1st practices by the horse-owners, and on sunday the 10 horses get selected and every contrada will get one by draw.
finally siena will be the real siena for 4 days. like in the last 400 years.

ciao !

Gala, are you seriously telling me that the following link doesn't show something to rival the real thing for pace, excitement, brilliant horsemanship and red white and green sheer passion? :nah: Please be gentle with your reply :laughs: 53° Palio dei Micci

Caro elefante - read this link and you will see that it was the organisers of the Palio who have suggested that Wales take part in the Palio international tour - not the Welsh. It will not happen - the Welsh people love riding their sheep far too much to come down from the mountains.

You are right by saying that the Palio suffers too because of the curren economic circumstances. An example ?
The contrada's will decide in one week if they (the comune) should organize a extraordinary palio this year. The comune requested that, to honor the senese costitution.
Extraordinary palio's have always be part of the history. The last was run in 2000 for the Millenium.
But now, like you said, economic circumstances will not allow to run one more palio.
So the head should say no, but the heart says yes :wideeyed:
If a contrada doesn't win since over 30 years, they like every reason to run. It's always a chance more to win.
And the circumstances are even more special because next year there would be a bigger reason to race on more time, to celebrate the 750 years of the Montaperti-battle against Florence. So 2 extraordinary palios in 2 years will for sure not happen.
So the people need to decide what they want. Better say no, in my point of view. Less VIP's in town, less tv-cover, less tourists.
Anyway, I think that Elefante is in need of moral support at this stage.
Grazie Gala,....but believe me, I don't need support. This kind of stuff makes us angry. Thats all.
read this link and you will see that it was the organisers of the Palio who have suggested that Wales take part in the Palio international tour.
No, no.... > believe me. Siena did not suggest to organize a Palio-International-tour. Palio is Siena and Siena is Palio. Never would Siena use there tradition the get publicity and there is no way to get the Palio on a 'tour'. Are you insane ?
Come and watch the Palio in Siena and you will understand how important it is to the people. It is the most important thing beside la famiglia. And even the famiglia get split during Palio-days and that means something. Don't you think ?
Ciao !

The contrade voted against a extraordinary palio in 2009 to celebrate the senese costitution. The contrade showed how important and indipendent they still are. The politicians need to call there VIP's guest's now and tell them, that there is no 3th Palio
Only 4 contrade voted for a yes: Nicchio, Torre, Aquila and Civetta
The other 13 voted: NO !
Economic reason, no really reason to celebrate something like the costitution, and contrada-reasons (not give the rival a chance more to win)....all this brought us to a NO.
I'm thankfull.
You seem to be a funny person juliancoll. In Siena a person like you would be called gazziloro.
Caro elephante - I've been waiting all my life for someone to call me that - but isn't the correct spelling "gazzilloro"?

Gosh, Ghianda. I'm lost for words.....
Anyway, I think that Elefante is in need of moral support at this stage.
And I have to agree with JC, it will not happen.
Caro elephante - I've been waiting all my life for someone to call me that - but isn't the correct spelling "gazzilloro"?
ciao juliancoll, si, si scrive gazzilloro.
but i make also mistakes writing in inglese, so one mistake more in italian hurts nobody.
the easier word with similar meaning would be calling you a fava. :laughs:

Uh maro' - sono come una fava - o due? I think I like you elefante.

For those as lost as I was with the word "gazzilloro" here is a list of expressions from Siena which would be very handy if you go there:

Parole senesi

Very interesting discussion, JC and Elefante. We always learn something new.

It's just another word for a "bug" or a contadino - a country bumpkin. In Neapolitan the word used would be "scarrafone" but it would be far more endearing if I were to call elefante a "gazzilloro" in Neapolitan - perche' ogni scarrafone e' bello a mamma soja.

Valdimontone, Bruco and Nicchio got selected to partecipate to the july palio.

Valdimontone will run the 6th consecutive palio and Bruco the 4th !

So on the track for july we will see this 10 contrade:

Pantera, Giraffa, Selva, Istrice, Aquila, Torre, Leocorno, Valdimontone, Bruco and Nicchio.

2 rivalry's: Pantera-Aquila and Valdimontone-Nicchio

maybe this video can show you a little bit what palio is for the people in siena:

we are 5 days away from the draw....then we finally will know the 10 contradas who will run on july.
in the last week they put sand on the piazza for the new james bond movie. not everybody is happy about it, but anyway...we can change it. money has more power the tradition and pride.:masked:
