I would add Terracina, It's also 1 hour south of Rome. Very popular with Italian holiday makers in the high season though. The water is warm enough at the end of October to swim in.

No need to go as far South as Terracina, you have many Lidos all along the coast that are very nice, including Lido dei Pini and Lido dei Gigli and, as Mark Carter suggests, the lakes are also very nice.

The same as Terracina, chief

What is the same as Terracina? I do not understand your statement.

having lived in Torvaianica for 3 years and now part time in the Colli Albani I would not stop at anywhere from Ostia to Circeo for an interesting place to visit. Ostia is OK if you want to sit at a beach cafe after visiting Ostia Antica (a great place). But don't go in the water. Although many locals do, the effluent from the Tiber comes out at Ostia and usually goes North but occasionally goes South, past Torvaianica and down to Circeo where the water gets cleaner. From Ostia to Torvaianica you have a lovely stretch of sand and dunes but the area is notorious for thefts from cars, nudists and druggies. Torvaianica has a small functional centre but is really a place for Roman families in the summer and is full of high rise blocks of flats. The strip of bars, restaurants, shops and flats continues southwards. If we want to go to the beach, it's Terracina or Sperlonga. If you just want a nice fish restaurant, I can recommend one in Torvaianica. But don't go in the sea

How about the lido on the shores of Lake Albano?, pedaloes for hire, a little beach - no sewage and lots of eateries, in summer v busy at the weekend, if you get bored you can hop up to Castel Gandolfo - not much there mind you except magnificent views

This link will show you the Bandiera Blu beaches for Europe and specifically for Lazio. Note that Nettuno is listed which is an hour train ride from Termini, the train station is walking distance to the beach. Others mentioned in this thread are also on this list.

You can actually rent canoes and pedalos on lake Nemi as well - you just follow the road from Genzano down to the lake and just when you think it can't get any narrower, there is a place you can rent canoes - really atmospheric and great restaurants on the edges of the crater above (much quieter than Lake Albano but then they don't have the Pope). Not much of a beach though

Yes Nettuno is popular in the summer - a very long stretch of sand (though without many amenities) and close to Anzio which has the war cemetry, boats to Ponza and a harbour where the fish are brought in each late afternoon. Anzio is worth a visit but our local friends always go further south if they want to go in the water.

And the lakes in northern Lazio? Lovely sandy beaches with shade trees.. cool water, boat trips to the islands at Bolsena, Capodimonte, absolute silence at Lago di Vico, Bracciano isnt bad either.

[quote=Markcarter;101103]Ostia is alright as long as you don't want to go in the water, which can have some unpleasant things floating in it. Upto towards Fregene or Torvaianica in the South the water gets cleaner but not much clearer. If you want nice clear water, I would suggest Sperlonga, which is about 1 hour south of Rome. It is really busy in the summer months though, when I usually give up and go to one of the lakes instead.

Do you come up to our lake?

Every now and then, though I prefer Martignano for swimming. We take our visitors to Caldara di Manziana as well, but not for the swimming.
