Help moving

Hi I'm new to this community and wondered if anyone could help.My sister lives in Palmi, Calabria and is looking to come back to the UK. However she has luggage she needs to bring back, its not a complete housemove but will consist of 6 large boxes/suitcases, a 6ft bookcase and a 4ft table and chairs (that fold). I'm having a nightmare trying to source a company that would be able to help get this back for anywhere near a reasonable price. I've been looking at removal companies, freight companies, haulage companies etc. The main response I'm getting is that its too far down in Italy for most companies to consider or the amount she needs to bring back is too little. The bookcase is the main item she wants to bring back and is 6ftX4ftx2ft so normal carriers wont touch it.She's tried locally but been quoted anywhere between 2,500 - 5,000 Euros. Ideally I'd be looking for part of a container as they seem more cost effective and it doesnt matter if it takes a month to get back to the UK.Has anyone else encountered the same problem and hopefully managed to come up with a solution!Any help would be greatfully received.

on the previous forums there were often people coming back with empty vans which could take something - we had a van which came back from le marche at easter - not much help now i know. Given the decling in brits buying in italy though there may be fewer of these vans than previously. Good Luck chris

Have you tried contacting railways? They usually have reasonable prices and do transports to and from Europe. I'm not sure about the effect time, but maybe it's worth calling and ask.

Hi We are planning to move from Cornwall UK to Basilicata (near Moliterno) in April/May 2010. We want to find the cheapest way of moving our belongings. We are not planning to move large items of furniture...mainly small items and boxes containing books, crockery, clothing etc. Any ideas on what is the best and cheapest way to do this. Thanks Sandra

Hi If it's any help we'll be moving from UK to Le Marche in mid May, meandering down in a huge van and arriving in Marche on June 1st. There'll be free capacity on our van, and I'm sure a reasonable price could be worked out if we can get our schedules together. Sounds like a few hundred quid rather than a few thousand! I'll drop you a PM with a telephone number. Oh, and we're likely to be in Cornwall around the time of your leaving, as we have people there to see.

Hi Sandra Depending on how much stuff you have the cheapest way is to do it yourself - hire (or borrow) a van, fill it up and drive out there. Alternatively find a local man with van and see what he charges. We weren't moving permanently but were kitting out our home in Le Marche - a lot of furniture was bought in Italy but when the pound dived we bought quite a bit (3 wardrobes, 5 chests of drawers, 5 bedside tables baby equipment, garden furniture etc) in the Uk as we knew of a really good cost effective shop. All of the stuff like pictures, bedding, towels, cutlery, pans, vases etc were bought in the UK. We have done a trip down with 2 of us in a volvo estate bursting at the seams plus roof box, a trip down with just my husband, a trip down at Christmas with children so not much room for house stuff and a man with van hired to take wardrobes etc. Man with van was only practical solution to furniture and not incredibly more expensive than hiring a van ourselves (although he went through France which added to the cost due to the tolls). It really depends on how much stuff you have - I would have thought you could do small boxes in a man with van - we have friends with a place in th french alps and they do the man with van option as well. What do the internet searches say? I find it hard to believe that you didn't find any movers. I realize now what a great business opportunity it is to start a moving company in this are of Italy.

Q - is it really more cost effective to equip a house with kit bought in the UK? Genuine Q I would have imagined linens, towels etc at least would be better quality and cheaper in Italy?

Everytime I visit my friend in Italy (Molise) the one thing she often asks me to bring over is duvet sets. I don't know about anywhere else but certainly in the South where she is they are way more expensive than in the UK. As for towels, she has to buy cheapish ones in whatever colour is available from the weekly market, if she wanted good quality ones in a colour of her choice they'd also cost a fortune. I also take baby vests and baby tights over for her - they are both much more expensive than in the UK and the Italian versions are not great quality, the tights in particular go bobbly and worn very quickly.

I'm moving to Italy myself in January and top of my list of items to take over is bedding and towels. I'll also be stocking up on my underwear from M&S before I go as that's also very expensive especially if you're on the larger cup size, my friend is a D cup and the last bra she bought when I was with her cost 40 euro.
