11732 bugs and creepy crawlies

When I have a good fire going in the kitchen and the room becomes warm often a big, fairly square flying bug appears and flys noisily around the light bulb.Does any one know what they are and if they are doing any damage to the house.Cheers .Stephen.

We Forum members do like a photo of said bug but if you catch it in your hand, does the bug give off the smell of almonds? If so it's harmless...throw it outside!!!

I think its a shield beetle, it sounds like a B52 bomber in flight, but is silly as a sack load when it bumps into everything.......but harmless to the house......

Definately a beetle, affectionatly know as a smelly bug. Usually 'bug of the month' in september/october, but they wake up in the warmth. Stubbed my toenail on a loose floorboard the other day and hundreds came out!!! :eeeek::eeeek:(I exaggerate), but I don't think they will do any harm.

I have a similar kind of problem with green smelly bugs... almost smell of corriander (random I know) opened the door last year and there were literally hundreds (well maybe not that many) of them around the door frame...

I agree with other posters, in that these are most likely to be Shield Bugs. Is this the fella?

They are called stink bugs for a very good reason, so whatever you do, don't swat them! Phew!

They're the fellas!!! Only your's is ENORMOUS, what's he been eating?:laughs::laughs::laughs:

I think further south, towards Napoli they have another regular migrant visitor. :winki:

Careful! In Italian we would say:

Non scherzare col fuoco!!!!!! :laughs:

O' Scarrafone!

How very dare you portray me as a smelly bright orange and red beetle Ghianda! As you can see in the photo above - I'm lovely and fluffy in reality - so I'm going to report your post for defamation of character!

These stink beetles......................we have lots of them here.................I've never squashed one, but I keep hearing that they smell? I might have to test this theory at some point to see just how bad it is ! I'll take a deep breath first!

Murderer! Save the Scarrafone!

Trouble is they're not consistent and you don't need to sqaush them. Sometimes you can safely pick one up and lob it outside and nothing happens. Next time you just think about opening the window and phew what a puzza.

Odd think is, I have to sniff my fingers even if I know it has "let one go" - must be a boy thing! Why oh Why?

I have been advised to take up a very special rug because it will probably get 'attacked' by bugs especially in summer. Does anyone has anyone experience of this? :veryconfused:

Puzzalenta. Don't know whether that's just the local term though. Dogs seem to like the flavour but you still get the smell. Is not really a pest.

My husband ate one by mistake once. It flew into his sandwich and he chewed for about two seconds before pulling the most disgusted face ever...

We, and our rugs, have been here for almost 9 years and the latter have not come under attack, at least not yet! We are at an altitude of about 500m so whether this can have an influence I don't know as bugs generally are not too much of a problem. When we first moved into the house there were some monster moths but these have all gone - perhaps it is these you were warned about?

Thanks to you both for your replies. I do own a Hoover and unfortunately seem to be using it more often now than it ever got used in the UK! Lets hope that we can squash or suck up the little devils, also got me thinking about our nice comfy funrnishings such as sofas and beds. I fell a lot more housework coming on :eeeek:
Mothballs may smell unpleasant - but they do work, so leave a few scattered around while you're away.
Am I imagining it, or did I really hear that the EU has banned traditional mothballs as they are just too toxic!?
