Many thanks for this, I haven't seen Amanda and Julian since the New Year, but its fantastic to read this and to see that they're fine. If you're reading this Amanda a big hug and good luck with the opening, you deserve it you've worked hard enough!

Hello Moderators: I'm sure you can assess how many "hits" this thread is receiving but I was wondering if it would reach a wider audience if moved to the general chat/postbag? This is such a good article and Amanda's blog both extremely interesting and well written. Interestingly, several friends have written to me from various corners of the globe (the UK, the US, and elsewhere) forwarding the article and all saying the same.

It throws up so many issues beyond the basic nightmare of a major renovation and equally as challenging, getting a business up and running. For example, their comments about adapting to rural life, real rural life, is one that I know for a fact many people making the move to the Italian countryside don't give enough consideration to. And it's not as though they live physically in the middle of nowhere either, they have a decent size town within an easy drive.

I also love Amanda's comment about how everywhere closes down for lunch and not feeling old enough yet to take a siesta! Personally, I've picked up this admirable habit with remarkable ease but so far as the shops being closed bit is concerned, Amanda there's always Etrusco, Badia Al Pino. Bit of a trek perhaps but practically all the shops are open (and empty) between 1-4!
