I thought of Abetone but would this really a destination for Romans? Anyone know how the various pistes in central Italy compare? For example, surely there's good skiing on Grand Sasso and perhaps further north up in the Appenines?

I also think it would be Abetone, as it is the major ski slope on the Appenines. The ski runs extend for over 50 km and across four majestic valleys: the Sestaione Valley, the Valley of the Lima, the Valley of the Scoltenna and Val di Luce, all connected across the slopes covered in natural and artificial snow, and with ski lifts at 1.200 m that reach heights of 1.950 m. You can also practice long-distance skiing on two ring-shaped tracks that stretch for a total of 15 Km. At each location there are ski schools with experienced and skilled instructors catering for all levels. It is a very popular resort for the Italians.
Probably heading for the Abetone area where there are lots of Slopes and Snow about that area now. Check it out online beginers catered for if you fancy have a sore backside for a few days..
