11859 Hire Car or Own Car

We have a house near to Lucca and visit several times a year. Family also stay there. So far we have always hired a car but we are considering whether it is worth buying a small car to leave somewhere near to Pisa airport when we are not there.

Does anyone know of any garages or car park spaces that could be rented or whether it is even worth considering buying a car? We have looked at long term car parking at the airport and that is €7 per day which does not achieve any saving!

Hi Steve, Not sure how close to Lucca you are but we know lots of people who have their own cars and keep them at the train station in Fornoli, it is free and noone seems to mind. The train from Pisa Airport is really simple and cheap, €8 ish. They leave the car at Fornoli and then train backwards and forwards to the airport. Does this help?:eerr:

We've discussed this endlessly over the last 5 years! On balance (and leaving aside the issue of parking charges), having a nice shiny new car that is not our responsibility and we don't have to insure/tax/maintain etc wins over the possible convenience of having your own car. Plus unless you have residency you're not allowed to buy a car in Italy (though there's lots of ways round that).

And if you look into insurance in Italy - it is very expensive compared to UK. Think teenage boy sole driver just passed his test and you'll get some idea!

...anf after the extortionate insurance, 3rd part only, the banger you decide to buy will then cost another 300ish for the change of ownership. Bangernomics here doesn't work quite the same here..
