Just fill in the form here with the details and then send.

This will produce your 'personal' Codice Fiscale as it is basd on your name and date of birth.

Print our the number which should consist of 6 letters followed by 2 numbers, one letter, 2 numbers, one letter, 3 numbers and one letter (total 16). The actual plastic card will take ages to come, but you will be quite OK using and providing the number you print out...

Note: you need to apply for an actual codice fiscale through your consulate. The number produced by the online-generators is not actually registered with Agenzia Entrate. To be legal, your CF must be registered with Agenzia Entrate.

An analogy would be making a license plate with the correct number format, mounting it on your car, and driving with it. You would need the number registered with Ministry of Transport to drive legally.

Have things changed? I got my CF from the Comune in the town where I was buying my house. The estate agent arranged it. A friend in a neighbouring province used the number obtained from the internet as per CaroleB. This was used for her purchase. She then went to a larger town to get the printed card.

The agents want to sell, you cannot buy without this number, so why not ask them to arrange it? They'll be getting a good percentage of the purchase price for their pains
Good luck

Our estate agent arranged the Codice Fiscale too but many years later (8!!!) we are still waiting for the plastic card to come through (it WAS being posted to us), despite visiting Ascoli Piceno, where our regional office is based, many times,. We have just quoted our CF number whenever we have been asked for it and so far it has never been a problem!

Our estate agent sorted the CF out for me - we went to a local office - took about 5 minutes - did it the day before I signed all the papers for the purchase.

.

Agreed, it's easy if you're in Italy. Just pop by Agenzia Entrate.

Hi, Like you I am new to the site but have lived in Italy for a couple of years now.
It depends where you are in the UK but I went to the Italian Consulate in London with my passport and after the usual queuing was registered the same morning. You have the option of having the plastic card you get with your number on sent either to an address in the UK or in Italy but as others have mentioned it takes about 6 months to arrive.. As also mentioned there are numerous websites which will tell you the number ( most of which are right ) but it is not legal until officially issued bt Agenzia Entrate.Hope this is of some help,
Ciao Andy.

You need to pop into your local commune office, it took us a while to find the right desk but everyone was really friendly. Remember to take your passports, the card came through the post and to our home in Germany. It was quite simple but you do need to have these numbers (if there are two of you) before you attend the meeting to finalise the sale.

Hiya
thanks to everybody who took the time to reply - much appreciated ! I've got the numbers now off the website as suggested by CaroleB but understand Noma's point about it having to be registered with the Agenzia Entrate. Would the numbers i have now be ok re the signing of the papers and then go to the local office to ensure its official!? Excuse my ignorance but this is all sooooooo new to me. Warmest regards to everybody p.s. i can't find the smiley faces now to include in my message. soz

Attestazione of codice fiscale is done by the Ufficio delle Entrate - they will look at your passport and give you a codice fiscale. This hard copy is indispensable for buying a house and opening a bank account. You cannot do either without the original. Your estate agent should have no problems escorting you to the UDE to get one, or if you sign a delega he can get one of your behalf, with a photocopy of your passport. Computer printouts have no legal validity. You will need some sort of Italian address - usually the estate agents office as your domicile until your house purchase is done and you are registered as the owner.

Not sure if this information is accurate but we were warned by our Geometra not to use the internet to get our codice fiscale numbers, as they are rarely accurate. It is true they are a mix of your name and birth date but this combo has to be checked against the central computer to ensure that no-one else has this number. We did (through impatience) look our numbers up on the net and the results looked nothing like the numbers we had issued by the commune. We are pleased we hadn't used them for anything official. Like I say, that was just our experience and it was five years OK, perhaps the internet is more accurate these days. I hope this information helps.

Agreed Jane. In fact the Agenzia Entrate site states
The only valid tax code is issued by the Inland Revenue. No outside body is therefore authorized to produce programs to calculate or print the code.
Your nearest Italian Consulate can also process it on your behalf. Contact them. We were able to do everything by mail and we got our cards sent to our permanent address in Spain. We were given our numbers in advance by the Consulate through a letter.

As I stated in my post a while back, that wasn't the case for a friend of mine in Marche. It seems that like many things, the rules are flexible...very.
When I registered my car here, I had no problems, whereas neighbours of mine had a very different experience. Just one week later in the same place. They were kept waiting, had to return another day and then the operaio refused to deal with them and insisted on an ACI agent being present to deal with it. I must admit that I like this random factor, parking tickets can be halved or anulled. The smoking ban is VERY flexible.
However for Snowdrop, the important thing is that she speaks to the estate agent. They will know the score in her comune.

I agree with you, the law, or at least the interpretation of it, is very flexible. However, with a CF issued by the UDE nobody can take issue with you as to its legality. I had clients last year who bought a new car, and the dealer insisted on their Carta di Soggiorno. They already has residency, and it took 3 phone calls on my behalf - one to the head of the motorizzazione . to make it clear that the CdS was abolished for UE citizens 2 years ago and that residence was perfectly acceptable. The problem is not so much flexibility of the law but ignorance of it in the first place. So, if you have a CF on the official piece of paper and take many photocopies of it - even the most ignorant functionary of the state can't tell you that it isnt acceptable.

Agreed- codice fiscale is so easy to do properly, not sure why anyone would prefer to wing it.
