Please bear with me as I get my bearings in the Italy Magazine Forum. I have spoken to Paolo, the son of Sergio Fragiacomo, the owner of Le Bistrot here in Venice. First, here is the link to Le Bistrot on my blog so you can read in detail what I am talking about:

(Something is wrong with my feed, and I am trying to find out if this link is the problem. Meanwhile, please click the link after my name and scroll down. Thank you.)

Well! I actually picked up the photo of Paolo, too! Why not?

Anyway, Sergio has taken his wife on vacation because it is their 30th anniversary, so he is not in Venice. I told Paolo not to bother them, but he spoke to his father last night (that is how wonderful these people are). I had asked Paolo to see if it would be okay with Sergio if we could make a special Venetian Cat Historical Menu that was not on the regular menu. Sergio said, of course. So, when Sergio gets back next week, I will go over there and together we will make a fixed menu so that you can have a set price. I will see if we can include EVERYTHING, even the wine, for 75 euro for two. That way you can have a special menu for reading the blog, Sergio will introduce you to some ancient Venetian recipes (which he is passionate) about, and Venice will attract some intelligent travelers. More next week about this.

Ciao from Venice,
Cat

Cat - do you rate the Chow venice book ChowbellaBooks.Com I have used it a few times on visits and find its full of great places.
Do you think you could have a good meal (anti pasti and pasta at any rate) at somewhere like the Vedova with house wine for around that sum? I would have thought so..or maybe some of the lovely canal side places in Canneregio as long as you dont go mad on fish..
Looking forward to reading more about your recommendations. Venice is my favorite place on earth and we try to go at least once a year.

Marina

I walked home last night after the service at the Basilica last night -- they brought out the ancient items they got from Constantinople after the Fourth Crusade in 1204 -- a thorn from the Crown of Thorns, the Precious Blood, etc.

I peeked through the windows of many restaurants in the area, and they were surprisingly empty. So, I headed over to Campiello del Remer, which is owned by some friends of mine, Angela and Emilio. They were packed. I asked Angela if Remer could meet the 75 euro dinner for two, including everything, and she said it would be difficult unless you got a pasta (personally, I think it would not be too difficult -- there's a lot of home-cooking on the menu:). So, I would do that because Remer is a lot of fun. They did a great job restoring it; it has a very warm, family-like feeling. There are big tables for groups, and also tables for two -- and a piano! I found a photo of the outside up on Flickr by Mitko Deney:

It's set in one of Venice's oldest campiellos, and when the weather is warm, it's full of people sipping wine outside. You can't see it from this angle, but the Grand Canal is behind where the photographer is standing.

To get there, go to Coin (our "department" store and walk past the church until you reach the restaurant Fiaschetteria Toscana. There is a skinny calle there on the left. Duck down that and just walk where it takes you, and you will arrive at Remer. (Or ask someone:). I spoke to Angela last night, and we didn't come up with a little game yet for you to play, but we said to say "Venetian Cat" as an experiment. (Venetian Cat is an organic process, as you can see.)

When it comes to "Chow! Venice," I did blurb the first printing, but asked the authors to take my name off any future editions. Instead, I recommend Michela Scibilia's "Venezia Osterie & Dintorni - A Guide to the Eateries of Venice," but you have to buy it here in Venice -- most bookshops carry it. Michela first published her guide in English in 1995, long before Chow! Venice. You will be amazed at how similar they are:winki:. Michela actually lives here, and she actually knows the people and places she's writing about -- she knows a lot more about food than I do. She dedicated the book: "To the Children Who Will Be Born in Venice." That tells you what kind of person she is. She's written several guides -- where to shop, etc. Really, you cannot go wrong with Michela's books. We both wrote for the "Time Out Guide to Venice and the Veneto," too -- you know? A real publisher -- not self-published. The editor, Ann Hanley (called affectionately "Axe") is one smart cookie, so I recommend that guide, too.

Le Bistrot is a great place to eat. I had dinner there couple of times. Descent level of service, nice interior, awesome food. However, what are your's favorite places to eat in Venice?

Well you are new to the Forum Dest and perhaps you want us to check out your Holidays in Venice website? What you won't know is that the administrators discourage us from naming restaurants, with full details.

Oh look, it’s our self publicity seeking kitten back again . Remind me, exactly who on the forum asked the question about a €75,00 dinner?

Thanks Mum, where would I be without your love and support.

You stay right were you are mum and count your blessings. Old Crones don't get a pension here, the post office doesn't work and the TV signal won't reach into the cantina were you would be living.

P.S. I only like Cadbury's, make sure you get it right this time.:madd:

Glowing in the current peaceful and ‘PC’ aware forum, I would like to apologise.

Firstly to members who may be looking for information on Venetian restaurants. I was indeed ‘under the weather’ and I acted hastily without checking my facts and re-ignited an old thread.

I then divulged in posting meaningless (irrelevant) and only slightly amusing asides which were not even worthy of the circolo.

I would like to add that any references to people needing a pension are not Old Crones (this is a charismatic and fictional forum character created in an exuberant period of the forum).

I think the post office in Italy needs a bit of help and understanding.

And I would like to finish off by saying those of us who live in Italy should only eat Italian chocolate to support the economy.

Sorry for mucking up this thread.

Won’t happen again…

(Sorry mum:winki:)

So where did the students have their 75 euro meal last year anyway?

Well that's just it PennyAW, we don't know because they never existed on the forum in the first place. Also, what kind of students can afford lodgings in St Mark's Square:veryconfused: ?

Now, I cannot remember the name, but there is a VERY good restaurant immediately over the Ponte dell'Accademia (opposite the art gallery), turn left and it's the first restaurant in that area.

Thinking of going?

If anyone wants Ventian restaurant recommendations I have an up to date list that I made. Just PM me or send me a bar of milk chocolate!

We were there not so long ago for hubby's 50th, first night (his birthday) we were booked into Da Fiore on recommendation... our lost luggage fortunately turned up just in time to scrub up... next night was a great place somewhere in Accademia, can never rememeber the name, where you get what you are given... there was a courtyard in the middle but we were there in November, the spaghetti with clams is still one of my best ever dishes, fantastic.
Hmmmmm Rome in six weeks.....

I had a great pizza (there was more on offer) with friends in and around that area. Can also rememeber a seafood starter and being a bit worried in case I fell foul to some lagoon borne lurgy - none such, it was great.

It was in February and the canals were shrouded in mist - absolutley magical, couldn't have been better. Travelling "home" on the water bus I felt like a million dollars.

And one last thing, half way through the meal there was an almighty commotion outside on the canal as a "fire engine" zoomed past at 30mph lights flashing and sirens wailing.

Maybe I should start a blog - no kickbacks though.

That would be me - am I missing something here? Do people think I am something I'm not or possible the alta ego of someone?

"Well that's just it PennyAW, we don't know because they never existed on the forum in the first place. Also, what kind of students can afford lodgings in St Mark's Square ?"

The sort who have worked really hard all year and deserved a well earned treat from 2 sets of parents. For your information my son and his girlfriend flew out friday morning at the crack of dawn on the cheapest flight possible and returned Saturday night on the last (cheapest) flight home. They had one night in a hotel, and spent 36 hours falling in love with venice.

Perhaps you should research a little before you make assumptions about postings/posters!

Glad the kids had a great time, and love Venice. I think there has been a bit of a mix up with threads... this one did start over a year ago with 'Cat Bauer' who seemed to advertise a few establishments. Anyway, alls well that ends well, I hope.

Jackie, whilst I am sorry you were upset by my post, I must come to my own defence, particularly as I am unhappy with your last comment.

In Cat Bauer’s first post, the quote she uses is not accredited; therefore I am not certain how anyone reading this thread could possible think it refers to your family? The dates of your recent son’s trip also do not ‘match’ as the original story refers to a couple coming out in Spring 2008!

Cat Bauer has been ‘told off' previously on the forum for advertising and if the quote contained in her text is indeed yours perhaps in future you should ask her to make that clear. You also quote me in your post without reference. This is exactly how confusion occurs and things can be misinterpreted.

Apology accepted. I see what you mean when quotes aren't attributed and will try to remember to do so in future. .

I realise that sometimes people use the forum for their own purposes and its a shame when, as a result, we become suspicious of everyones motives.

I don't often post but I am a real person and I'm sure several regular members can vouch for me.

I have no connections with any company/restaurant although if someone would like me to be a product tester, all expences paid I wouldn't say no :winki:

Glad there are no hard feelings.

Now, perhaps we can all get into an orderly queue for the restaurant testers job vacancy.
