The gift should match where you are in "the pecking order"...ie a relative or just a friend. The value should at least match "the cost of your meal". So if you are going to the sit down luncheon you will give more than if you were just going to say the refreshments offered in the evening. Receiving money is not frowned upon but perhaps it's nicer to give a Gift Voucher (called Buono) from somewhere like Euronics, so that the couple can choose their own gift. Wedding cards aren't sent but Italian couples seem to like the ones we buy in England for them! Apparently on the day of the wedding, guests can go along to the couple's new home and admire the gifts in situ!!!

Often household and kitchen/cook ware shops offer a Wedding Gift list - so guests can simply go to the shop concerned and choose something from the list compiled by the couple. In a couple of our local pottery shops they sell large terracotta, vase shaped 'money banks' - apparently the wedding couple strategically place these at the reception for guests to make donations.
:rolleyes:A lot will depend on where you are situated in the north gifts are I belive more modest than in the south, money is often given and the amount will depend how closely you are related and how many of you are attending . In September we attended my husbands neice' s wedding , there where 4 of us and we gave 450 euro as a present. Sometimes if a group of friends are all going to the same wedding they will put money together and buy a gift such as a tv .
