11957 excellent book

Didn't think I could put this in the book review section as it's not about Italy. I wanted to put it in the thread about "Rossano" and other books set in the war as I thought it might interest the people who enjoyed reading those books, but this one is actually set in Germany in WW2 and was given to me by Heiko. It is called "The Book Thief" by Marcus Zusak and is the story of Liesel, a girl living with a foster family as her communist parents have been taken to a concentration camp. I found the style and content exceptional and , as I always have an urgent need to encourage people to read books I love, I am posting it here. Perhaps, if the "powers that be" think it doesn't matter that it's not set in Italy as books set in the war have been a fairly recent topic, they might like to move it to a section where people interested are more likely to see it?

er if we are recommending books not about Italy may I strongly recommend 'The Rescue Man' by Anthony Quinn, set in Liverpool in WW2.
However, I think this is getting very far away from Italian subjects.....

Hi Pam,

Glad you liked the book.

Penny, I suppose in my mind it's linked to the forum as it's because I've been so interested in the books set in the war in Italy that it's made me want to look at other countries. Previously I hadn't really read much about the war and I thank the forum for expanding my interest in the subject. I thought maybe there were others who felt the same.

There are so many books set in Italy during the war and amongst my favourites is War in the Val d'Orcia by Iris Origo.

I too thoroughly enjoyed The Book Thief, is there a group or somewhere to discuss books, I am new and still finding my way around lol !!!

Lollita, there is a book review section under Culture and Entertainment.
