12097 Detour from Rome/Fiumicino?

We will be driving from Fiumicino to Le Marche tomorrow. My thoughts are to take the autostrada from Rome to the L'Aquila/Pescara split and then drive to Pescara and up the Adriatic coast. Has anyone heard about recommended detours or thoughts of their own? Thanks!

We always use the SS4 - The Via Salaria after taking the GRA round to the A1 Firenza Autostrada, coming off at the Fiano Romano junction and straight onto the SS4, through Rieti, Posta, Aquasanta Terme etc .Although not a motorway, the route is very pretty and doesn't take very long on a good day. We have made it from Ciampino Airport to Comunanza in just over 2 1/2 hours! I guess it all depends where abouts in Le Marche you are going. This route shouldn't have any damaged roads, as it is further north, but may be slightly busier if the Autostrada is closed.
Hope this help - have a safe journey.

What about going though Rieti and then up on the SS4. Last time I went to Ancona I went Terni-Foligno-Fabriano. It is not a bad road, more pleasant drive than the autostrada and for a tight wad like me, no tolls.

We usually go the way Sarah and Mark recommends - we've tried the motorway but it is a lot further (but that depends on where you are going). We usually get to Amatrice at lunchtime and have pasta amatriciana in a place just off the mainroad (on the right) - unfortunately this time we will be traveling on Good Friday and being Catholic it means that the usual lunch is off the menu for us

Here is the Autostrada site: Autostrade per l'Italia S.p.A.
I have not seen if the Autostrada that goes past L'Aquila is closed but I would not be surprised with all of those long bridges. The Via Salaria is a good route, 2 portions just east of Rieti and west of Aquasanta are curvy but the rest is easy. Mark and Sarah give good directions.
