I suspect it might be impossible for you but lots of Romans go out in to the country at weekends for a good old feed. Agriturismos are very good on the whole but beware that the antipasto and substantial pasta could finish you off for the secundo, still what the hell - the principle that the customer is to get what he wants and enjoy it still operates in Italy. I have a vegetarian friend who wanted TWO pastas - the reply - certainly!

La Scopettaro, al Testaccio, Lungo Tevere Testacci 07
I ate my first glorious Roman feast here and every time I am in Rome I return. It never disappoints in typical Roman fare. Only a week or so to go, and I'll be filled with it all again.

Just to confuse matters there is another excellent restaurant called La Carbonara on Via Panisperna, near Santa Maria Maggiore. Not a particualarly big restaurant but it seemed to be packed out most evenings, always a good sign. All the customers had written their recommendations on the walls!! The food and wine were excellent, one of the best meals I've had in Italy.

It is not Roman cuisine, but from Emilia Romagna, which is probably the province that serves the best food in Italy..... although a bit on the heavy side, you know, they say "Bologna la dotta, Bologna la grassa".....
Anyway, this one is next to Piazza Barberini and I find it great:
Colline Emiliane
38 Via degli Avignonesi
I also found a review for you: Colline Emiliane | Restaurant Review | Rome | Frommers.com
It is better to book ahead.

Another fantastic gastronomic experience was La Campana, Vicolo della Campana
THis claims to be one of the oldest in Rome - feeding Romans when Michelangelo was just a lad. We felt really priveleged to be served there. It was a particularly busy night and some tourists (obvious and loud) were being turned away but we were shown to a lovely table and a lovely dining experience. N.B. No English translation on the menu.

If you are near the Patheon at lunch time and want pasta or a pizza, La Sagrestia in a small street off to one side Via del Seminario (closed Wed). In warm weather one of the best places to eat outside in Rome, in our opinion, is San Teodoro Via dei Fienili. Closed Sunday. Tel 0667 80933 Book for outside table. Seafood and fish a speciality. Take Bus to Via del Teatro di Marcello Opens at 1 pm for lunch 7.30 for supper.
We have eaten at various Gambero Rosso restaurants in Rome and the famous Jewish restaurant Piperno and wouldn't do it again. We much prefer to eat where the Romans do and La Carbonara in Pz. Campo de Fiori is tops for us. Closed Tuesday and all of August.

Tram Tram in the San Lorenzo district is mainly a locals place, noisy, crowded, maybe a little slow, but well worth it. A mixture of different regions Roman, Puglian and Sicilian, so something for everyone. Prices are reasonable, open for lunch and dinner, closed Mondays. Booking recommended.

The most wonderful place that we have eaten in Rome is Hostaria Der Quartarolo. I know they have a website where their full menu was available to see. When we were there they only spoke Italian but explained as much as possible . The food was so beautiful so might be well worth giving it a try.
This place is loved by Romans so better book. Delicious genuino food. (Others please note it's closed in August and on Tuesdays). It takes up the whole of one side of Campo de Fiori. and is a tardis inside! La Carbonara 0039 06 68 64 783
