10660 Edison : Enel's NEW Rival

Some of you might already know, but for those who don't, there is a new electricity provider in Italy called Edison.

Has anyone switched over? If so, what are your experiences?

Looks very interesting.....TVM

This is the link to their site; it's all in Italian:

Thanks for the note, tinacara...now I wonder whether Berlusconi bulling up shares in Enel yesterday has any connection with this story! Bit of research to do now...

I just saw an ad for Edison this morning and thought "Hmmm...wonder what this is all about?"...and now thanks to this post, I know!

They are advertising alot on television - don't know how their costs compare to ENELs offers.

Just had a look at their site, offer seems quite good, although I could not get to see the savings on the amount of electricity that we use (approx 11000 kw per year). There were also no rates on the site to try and work out comparisons. For 7500kw annual usage, it appears that you save about 11% per year on the single rate, but less on the off peak rate. Please correct me if I have missread the info.

11000 kw equates to about Euro 2100, but that is for a virtual totally electrically run house, with 24 hour heating and hot water. We also use a washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, 3kw electric oven, microwave etc. If we switched all the lighting on in the house we would use 3kw per hour alone, but obviously we do not normally go to that extreme. Heat pump only uses 2.2 kw per hour and at the moment runs for about 2 hours per day on average, so overall not so bad considering all the factors. 10% would save me about 200 euros, so may be worth considering.

When Tinacara posted the useful information about Edison, we looked at the site and the boss did some sums. (We don't have on and off peak just normal ENEL 10 kw supply). We could save about 260 eu a year. The problem is that the site information is not "transparent" It simply advises you to register before year end to obtain a discount as an Edison customer. Being used to English consumerism, we have questions that this site does not answer and are still investigating the offer. I should be interested to read if anyone manages to change from ENEL to Edison without their hair going grey...(eg. spent months trying to change banks and not succeeded so far). Hope this thread keeps running and more info is provided by Forum members.

Thanks for this post, I will certainly look into it.

Never did get a reply from Edison to try and get a comparison, but the 20% discount is only on the electricity that you use and not on the other charges.
Have linked below a sample bill from them, for a comparison to perhaps someone who uses the equivalent amount of electricity. Over the next few days will try and evaluate the standing charges etc.

I've just done a search to see what the Italians are saying about Edison and have found something quite interesting; the contract:
http://www.edisoncasa.it/assets/pdf/condizioni-tecnico-economiche-EDISONCASA.pdf
It's all in italian but in art 3 it says that the initial contract is for one year and that Edison casa can review its costs.
"EDISON ENERGIA avrà, inoltre, la facoltà di variare le condizioni economiche applicabili
alla fornitura di energia elettrica per l’anno successivo comunicandole al CLIENTE entro il termine di 60 (sessanta) giorni antecedenti la scadenza del CONTRATTO..."

I raise an eyebrow and wonder.... :eerr:

I am trying to find out a little more about this offer from Enel. It seems you can get a fixed price for 2 years, and also something about Renewable Energy Certificate. My Italian is not that good to fully understand it, but perhaps there is someone out there who can explain it better.

Tinacara, I think you are right to raise an eyebrow.
Sounds a classic come-on to me, to get you to transfer then up the rate on you next year.
I think it's best to stick with ENEL for a while and keep an eye on the situation.

I read about the Edison offer here thanks to Tinacara.
We are resident in Italy and pay for a 10kw supply and our domestic ENEL bills are high, (includes a pool). As I understand it, maximum prices for Electricity are set by a regulator. Edison say that they will reduce this price by 20%. We filled in the form online and have had a couple of phone calls re the correct name, address and Codice Fiscale and now await paper forms to complete. So we are half way but so far, for us, the savings appear to be worth the aggro. We couldn't find other companies offering a like for like 20% off deal. Will update once I have more experience of using Edison but offer possibly ends at end of December.

So now they have competition I expect they will become competitive and in about a years time they will probably beable to provide the service that we all want.

This is a copy of a reply that I had regarding the Enel fixed rate offer from our company. It may be worth looking into for some of you.
Per la tua casa scegli e-light: blocchi il prezzo della componente energia per due anni, pianifichi la spesa e ogni 2 mesi sai quanto spendi in bolletta.
Contract e-light, price fixed for two years.

with an addition of 2 eur/month energy compensated with RECS.

I'm not commenting on whether it is a good deal, but your translation of 'imposte' isn't correct (or at least it isn't correct if you take the definition of 'imposte' from your ENEL bill).

An ENEL bill (I haven't got a different one to compare) lists the 'Quota Energia' (your componente energia, I assume): then it adds on the quota fissa and quota potenza, (it calls these elements 'imposte'), THEN it adds VAT.

Now it might be that Edison doesn't impose any standing charges, I dunno yet.

(I'll try and find a pdf which ilsole24ore published a couple of days ago considering all the new energy deals.)

Thanks Charles, I only posted the reply that I had from the director of Geotherm after asking him if it was a good deal. His Italian - English translation may be a little poor, but 9 cents seemed very good considering that anything over 3kw, for resident or not is 18 cents per kw.

Well, since what I am looking at (which is my last ENEL bill). my 'quota energetica' varies between 0,118 and 0,133 (kWh) - (given that I am on a domestic 3kW supply so basically subsidised). Your 'quote' that 'this element' of your bill will be 0,09XX, and your advisor saying that it would be 0,18XX outside ENEL - well, I can't really comment (because I'm focussed on 3kW domestic tariff).

Unless these 'new deals' become a lot more transparent I'd be wary of them for a 'normalish' domestic consumer. Please (although I'm sure many forum regulars understand that your electric consumption is intelligently outside the norm) keep us informed of every update of which you become aware.

(And I promise, I will trawl up that pdf from the Italian 'equiv of the FT' - well, maybe not quite the equivalent, but as good as it gets!)

This is a little document which briefly outlines the various offers available for domestic energy contracts. It doesn't compare them, but it does give you directions to the websites of each supplier. (It mentions that on the Edison site there is a 'calculator', which if you input the details from your last electricity bill it will tell you how much you could save.)

Following on from a previous post regarding the Enel fixed price offer. This may be of some interest to those of you who use less than 2700kw per year in electricity and are on a 3kw supply.

Well having made the decision to take up the Edison offer, (we'd save money if we could save 20% on our electricity bills), progress has been very slow but finally we are Edison clients. In October we enquired on line and completed an online form. We received a lengthy phone call and patiently answered almost the same questions, again. On Christmas Eve we received a postcard in our box saying there was a recorded delivery letter for us but PO was shut of course and we thought ...oh no not another speedding fine! When I collected the recorded delivery letter it was a confirmation from Edison that we had spoken. Just a couple of lines!!! On the 31st January an ordinary bright green envelope arrived. Edison, saying we were now clients...nothing more so now we wait to see what the saving will be! Funny way to run a competitive business? Will keep you posted.

And I'm part way through the "process" of switching to the ENEL fixed price offering. In summary applied on the phone 3 weeks ago. was phoned back later that day and subjected to a 14 minute recorded grilling (maybe a bit like Noble) where I had to answer "yes" about 30 times. Told that a letter would be sent with the details and for me to confirm etc etc. No sign of letter despite phoning to chase twice. "It's competition Jim, but not as we know it".

Will also keep you posted.

We think that the general rates for Electricity has risen, no matter who the supplier is but we have just received our first bill from Edison for Jan & Feb 2009. There is a small saving possibly 15 euros but it all adds up over the year. So if you can stand the hastle of changing to Edison it's worth it.

Does anyone know if there is an "ombudsman" service for utilities in Italy? I have come to the end of my tether with ENI who keep chasing me for payment of 3 invoices in 2006. Since that year I have sent recorded delivery letters, made phone calls, sent faxes providing proof of payment, but it just goes away for 6 months, then they start demanding payment again. I would like to switch to having both gas and electricity from ENEL but I am sure that will be a huge hastle to set up. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
