12063 Renovate own property

Does anyone know if you can renovate your own property. We are talking about a shell, complete with roof that we are wanting to do all renovations. I am a qualified builder/construction manager from the uk with all the relevent qualifications and certificates.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated as we are constantly being given conflicting reports from our geometra.

Hi,

I suggest you speak to your Gemotra as he will have to sort out your licences and insure the work....

Have a look at this old thread. it may help

My husband is a retired foreign architect and he did all the plans, wrote specifications (in Italian!!!!) and did all the thinking behind the renovation. We employed a Geometra to coordinate works, etc. He simply followed the instructions and dealt with the different trades in our absence. I think that there should be no problem for you to do the works, providing an Italian geometra is involved. Careful about insurance issues, check all those details. Discuss it with your geometra and if I am saying something wrong, please correct.

I would suggest you PM another member Marco62 who is an Italian architect who worked in London for many years and so can understand our DIY minds a bit better.

I know you can apply for a DIA whereby you do the work "in economia" but I'm afraid I don't know what this means in reality.

Personally, I wouldn't ask a geometra unless I knew him very well and he wasn't involved in the project because at the end of the day he gets x % of whatever work you get done so it is not in his interest for you to do it oyurself.

you need to hire a geometra, or Architect, or ingegenere to do the drawings for you and submit them at the local comune. It could be a DIA or permesso di costruire, it depends on the nature of the works that you need to carry out. After that, you can carry out the works yourself!
