Hi Sarahandmark,
Don't know if this will work but try "admin" (without the inverted commas)it is usually the default password on most networks if not there may be a number/letter sticker on your router.
I'm sure someone more knowlegable will be along in a minute but it's worth a shot!

When your guest searches for the wireless connection, I assume they see "yours" do they see one with a padlock or (like this example) with no padlock?

I presume you are connected to your modem by wire otherwise you could look under settings/network connections for your wireless password and give your guests that.
Some wireless modems allow you to access their settings by a sort of "web page", the instruction book gives the address (usually just a number or something like "login-router") & you can see & alter the wireless passwords there without affecting your own internet password.
I stayed somewhere recently where I had to use the 12 digit password that was printed on the label on the bottom of the modem, i.e. they were not able to choose their own!
Hope this helps

Sarah & Mark,
if you look on the bottom of your Alice router, the password is there. There might be a couple of types but try them all and one of them will work.
Give me a call if you get stuck.

Hi - sorry for not getting back - my computer keeps cutting out (obviously not used to the heat after the long winter!). Thanks so much for all your prompt answers.
Charles - he is trying to use his laptop with my Alice wi-fi connection & how do you 'bully' it into working?
Jinty - will try 'admin' (as soon as he has finished his lunch - better not interupt now!)
Tusc - I don't see a padlock on mine, but will check with him asap
Chris & Penny - yes I had to put in a password when I stayed in a hotel in Rome - checking the bottom (of the router) right now - gosh there is a lot on there!!!!
Thanks so much - plenty to try for now.

Checked out the bottom of the router and the only 12 digit number on there is where is says 'Mac Addr' Could this be the password?

Well I having been paying for Alice since the end of August and have never been able to connect until a few days ago. I have had everyone out and it turned out in the end to be the electritians fault as he had not configured the router properly. He finally admited he couldn't do it and got another friend who was a computer expert to sort it out. He couldn't do it either.
After promising several times to return with someone else who could sort it out I sat down late one night and managed to connect it myself. I have no idea how I did it but so far so good. :GEEK:
Anyhow, to perhaps help you with your problem I put in the password aliceadsl which was once recommended by a fellow forum member and bingo..............................
I hope your friend has luck.

Have you got Alice Business or Alice residential?
If it is Business then the password is not on the bottom of the router. If all you have is MAC ADDR then it sounds like Alice Busines.
Which model of router do you have?
Do you have an Alice card that you have to put in it (looks like a red credit card? If so, the password & SSID should be on the card.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Penny - I think it is a business router - there is a red card which I have just taken out and the only thing on there is a 16 digit number starting with BA000 - could this be it? Thanks for your help.
To see wireless settings

Hi Sarah and Mark
When your friend searches for a wireless network and your home network appears does it say Unsecured wireless network or Security enabled wireless network.
If it says Security enabled then your network needs a password but it sounds like you don't have this set up as you would probably remember setting up a password on your wi-fi. Usually you can check your settings in your router (including security settings) by typing http://192.168.2.1/ in the address field of your home computer is connected to the router through a cable or wireless connection You should be able to reset the password if there is security enabled.
If the network is Unsecured then your friend shouldn't need a password at all and the router should upply connection information to ALICE. Could you give any more info about your set up. For example I use Alice ADSL and have an Alice modem. The modem connects to internet with a generic username and password which is the same as everyone else in my area and is telecom/telecom. The modem is connected to a Belkin router. My main computer connects to a Belkin router with a cable and my laptops connect to the router through wireless connection.

Hi Sarah and Mark - It took me some time to get the previous email written (had to go off and do something in the middle of it) and by the time I posted it you and Penny had already posted about the set up being a business router.
Have to admit I know nothing about Alice Business Router set up here in Italy- if it's anything like their residential set up then it will be weird and unusual - hope you find solution soon :-)
ADSL business

That's right Kevan, but you have ADSL residential which is different. As you know this works on ours too but Sarah's different.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Agree with all you say Kevan. The thing is some computers have security setting which means you have to 'bully' them into connecting to an unsecured wireless network - simply by insiting that "just this once, it's okay, I promise" or ticking the equivalent nanny box: but first you have to find which bit of your operating system, or maybe even your AV, is protecting you too hard, and that's not always easy!

Hi everyone - sorry I'm working and taking telephone calls as I've been writing posts and by time I've posted my email - it's already out of date - wow this is a fast thread. I also posted same message twice and have deleted the repeated post.

Sounds all too familiar - my compamy laptop has to be severely bullied into letting me connect to wireless networks - it won't connect no matter how many times I threaten it :-)
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
It depends on which model of router you have. If it is an "Alice Business Gate 2 plus WiFi" you should have a red card and allegedly it is on the reverse. You are looking for the WEPA key or password (in Italian they sometimes call it passphrase). It is about 14 characeters (can't remember exactly how many - sorry). Otherwise check through your documentation that came with the router and I think it will be on the letter that the card was stuck to. It looks like this:
If Telecom set it up for you it won't be an unsecured wireless connection. They always set a WEP or WPA key.

If this is the case then everyone has a different password and you have three options:

find the password they gave you (hopefully Penny has pointed you in right direction)

try http://192.168.2.1/ to see if you can get into settings (but this is Alice so probably not possible

bite the bullet and phone Alice...again
PS - what's the advantage of business set up on Alice - does it give you secure access seperate from guest access - I took a look at their website but my Italian is still too basic to really understand the details.
And I am multi-tasking again...so probably been several replies sent before I finally click the submit button :-) :-)

Sorry - whilst 'looking' at the settings, somehow it cut me off the internet and just got it back working again now (going from bad to worse!). Anyway - Kevan - thanks - tried to follow the link but it didn't work - I have not set up a password myself - maybe the telecom chap did himself and didn't tell me
Penny - I will try and find the letter it came with!
AmazingMarche - know what you mean - if M goes to the shop for 3 things, he always comes back with 1 (or 2 if I am lucky!).

If you want to expense the cost of your ADSL/phone etc. against your Italian tax return you must have a Business account with Telecom with your partita IVA.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
We didn't ask for a business account, so not sure why we got it, but yes Penny, it is a "Alice Business Gate 2 plus WiFi" box and it has got WPA key set up.
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
You need to find the bit of paper or else try 192.168.1.1 and hit the "configura" button below "collegamento WiFi" then you'll see the password. Good luck!

Penny/ Kevan - I may be really stupid but where do I put the http://192.168.2.1/ as it just comes up with an error message if you put it in the website address line???
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
You just want http://192.168.1.1
Sorry Kevan but your ip address is incorrect for this type of modem
You just want http://192.168.1.1

I know - it's http://192.168.2.1/ to see settings for my belkin router connected to the Alice modem and http://192.168.1.1/ to see the Alice modem settings when I'm connected direct to the Alice modem.
I have to say I find the set up here in Italy a bit confusing as its the exact opposite of the set up I've been used to outside Italy. To have a security password for wi-fi set by the provider and not by yourself seems very unhelpful! What happens if you give out the password to a guest but later want to change the password for security? Do you have to request a change from Alice???
Sarah and Marc - I hope you have sorted this out and found the password by now.
PS I just found out the reason my UK Belkin router temporarily loses the signal for 30 seconds or so every 20 minutes is because it doesn't work well with Italian internet providers (or Spanish ones either). I've upgraded the firmware as the support people suggested with a fix for Italy and Spain and now my router won't work!! It looks like I will have to get one of these ALice business routers to get my wi-fi working again - but I'll make sure that i write the password on the desk so I dont lose it :-)

Hi Kevan,
I've been having the same problem for the past couple off days, so not sure if it's your router or simply our connection up at Force as I don't use the same router
In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
I used a Netgear wireless router brought from England for 3 years and never had a problem here in Italy with it if that helps.
I agree it's not very helpful of Telecom Italia to set the wireless passkey and that's it. I am guessing you should be able to change the wireless passkey as the userid & password of the account is also checked independently. Can't try it as I don't have wireless in the shop and I have residential line at home so no red card to slot into the router.
Hi Kevan,
I've been having the same problem for the past couple off days, so not sure if it's your router or simply our connection up at Force as I don't use the same router
It's been ongoing for months and driving me mad. I need wireless for work as i use a Mac and a work laptop at the same time (and a PC laptop as well when I'm feeling like being silly and having 3 computers on at the same time). But the connection drops just when I'm in the middle of hosting a meeting on skype and everyone gets booted out! So I've been switching back to cable direct to the modem for meetings and sending emails then back to wireless for everything else. At least it's giving me some exercise having to scarmble around changing wires over.
After months of of trying to work out what on earth the problem could be and discussing on techie forums and trying lots of madcap suggestions involving phone interference and electric pylons too close to the house I finally came across a little article on Belkin website this month "Very poor throughput when the router is used with the ISP's FastWeb in Italy or Onno in Spain" and I think this is the problem with Alice as well
Belkin : Support : F5D9230 v3xxx - Pre-Release Firmware Update
I contacted Belkin support - they confirmed this was the problem and told me to upgrade the firmware which I did last week and now... the router won't connect at all...and I'm stuck with using one computer at a time and starting to get withdrawal symptoms - I need to get outside and get a life!
PS the internet connectivity this week in Force area has also been problematic and slowed to a crawl at times...

Thanks everyone for your help - guests managed to get connected to the internet yesterday and are now very happy! My computer packed up altogether yesterday and had to take it to get fixed, so sorry for the late reply, but if anyone has a computer problem, M & P in Comunanza (behind Conad) are very good and helpful (and reasonably priced).
Is he using your wireless connection - I assume so. Otherwise, is he just having a problem with e-mail? He may have (on his computer) some bit of software which allows him to access eg a secure work network which he doesn't have on your computer. Suggest he tries accessing his mail (if it isn't work related) through a public web access, or with an e-mail client like outlook express.
I doubt it is anything to do with TI
EDIT. I'm not sure I read your post correctly. Is he using your computer, or his? If his own, tell him to try network settings in Control Panel and bully it into connecting to your network - usually works.
