Renovation of outside staircase

02/23/2013 - 13:23

We are having our outside staircase renovated - at the moment it is all in rather rough concrete which is crumbling. Out builder has sent us details of the work this involves. I can understand most of it, but am having trouble with the following.- Ornie per coronamento pianerottolo, pedate di gradini in pietra tipo “Gorgoglione” dello spessore cm. 5;- Lavorazione a cornice delle coste con toro sul coronamento e gradinata in pietra;Could anyone enlighten me? I would be very grateful.Karen

My Italian isn't great, but I has a balcony repaired/extended a couple of years ago. I think that "pedate di gradini in pietra tipo “Gorgoglione” dello spessore cm. 5;" means that the steps will be surfaced with 5cm thick stone [a local stone - type Gorgoglione] - mine were tiled The bit previous to that may refer to facing the vertical faces on the steps, and the final bit may refer to labour costs for finishes  [but I'm less sure of these 2]

Oneri (costs) for sticking onto your staircase 5cm thick treads in stone named Gorgoglione, together with covering your landing with the same stone. Both the stone for the treads, and for the landing, are to be rounded over on the edges which you will see - in other words finished as you would expect a tread or a landing to be (con toro). It is normal for the lavorazione con toro to be priced separately from the per sq m cost of the stone. In the item which you quote there is no provision for cladding the risers (the vertical bits between each step) of the staircase.

Thank you so much for your replies, both of you. I did ask for the steps to be clad in stone, as one of the original steps has a stone slab, although all the rest are this very rough concrete with big stones in it. It hadn't occurred to me that that 'ornie' might be a typo for 'oneri'! I thought it referred to some kind of decoration. There is a separate item for the risers: 'Intonaco all’alzata dei gradini' which I think means that they will just be plastered. When I have learned how to upload photos I will post some before and after pictures. Thanks again, Karen

From what you quote, it isn't crystal clear whether the oneri cover both the costs of the stone and the labour for fixing it. You are presumably reading an estimate for the work, rather than a computo metrico, and I would take it that the price quoted does include the material - but it would be worth checking with the builder.
