59 Has anyone used the Pet Passport Scheme ?

Took the wolf down the vet yesterday and he is now the proud owner of his very own passport

This summer we plan to take him to our house in Italy for a few weeks - thus far all looks good and the system has been easy to follow and looks very good.

My worry is the trurn journey where you have to have worming/flea treatments completed 48 hours max 24 hours min before re-entering the UK - still trying to work out whether it is worth finding a vet in italy to have these treatments administered 48 hours before or going back to France a day early to have the treatments complted at Calais - where the vets are perhaps a bit more offay with the system.

We are planning to take the shuttle through France and enter Italy via Switzerland

Has anyone used the scheme in thnis way and what advise would you give ?

it appears that this business about ticks/worms is an anglo/french conspiracy.as it's not an issue in italy your best solution to avoid the spiders web of costly vets touting around Calais is to go to a local (italian) vet before you leave (just to check pussy doesn't have ticks worms and the like) and get him to date your passport within the required times for calais. It's no skin off his nose and they'll be only too happy to accomodate .i know a number of people who have done this, takes all the stress out of journey.

Thanks for top tip for journey back to UK.

We moved out to Bassano Del Grappa in August last year bringing our Mutt, complete with new style passport. We ferried from Calais and then drove via Monte Bianco. Not a soul paid the slightest bit of notice and neither the passport nor the dog were checked at any point on the journey.

We too were wondering about timing of vets visit on the way back when we visit UK this summer. We will certainly try your suggestion!

We bought a years supply of the wormer/tick treatment etc, but have since discovered that the same brands are readily available here (frontline). We also bought 'Stronghold' with us as it protects against heartworm. This is still possibly an issue around Med.

On another note, she is a rather large and hairy Pastore Tedesco and we were a bit worried about how the locals would receive her, but she has made more friends than us and is known locally as 'Che bella Cane Lupo'.

Have a good journey!

We brought our two dogs out last July and they must have been some of the first recipients of the actual doggie passport as we left on 7th July and they came into force on 3rd July!

No-one looked at them or the paperwork at Boulogne or anywhere else on the journey. We had the export licence for the dogs and this would have required an extra piece of paper if we had gone through Switzerland so we too did the Mont Blanc tunnel. I can recommend a great place to stay near Torino that accepts dogs. It's an old iron mine and has a wonderful garden complete with rushing river.

If you are looking for dog friendly stopovers, we have always found Alistair Sawday's guides to be excellent as he has 2 different symbols for 'accepts dogs' and 'allows dogs to sleep in the room'. Big difference when you have two spoilt pooches like us
