91 Car Hire (Ciampino Airport) August

This topic crops up time and time again, and after many searches I am still none the wiser when trying to find cheap Car Hire.

I have checked the usual suspects,Avis,Hertz,Auto-Europe,Sixt,Alamo,Airline Network,Budget and a few other main players.

I am looking for August from Rome Ciampino for 2/3 weeks The best I can come up with for 2 weeks is about £270. (economy model)

Any ideas/names/websites?

Thanks in advance.

I have always recommended www.SkyCars.com as we have never found anything cheaper (or with as many inclusive freebies like free additional driver etc...) but have recently tried www.AutoEuropa.it (we always end up booking then through SkyCars & so thought I'd try them direct).

As a for instance 2 wks from Ciampino 1-Aug to 15-Aug:
www.Skycars.com -> LANCIA Y10 = £304.29
www.AutoEuropa.it -> Daewoo Matiz = EUR 315 (about £220?)

So the question is.......who did you use to get your price!?

Thanks for you prompt reply.

I went first of all direct with the 'bigs' of the industry thinking that being 'bigs' of the industry they would be cheaper.Unfortunately not.
I then went via www.kelkoo.com and they seemed to quote slightly cheaper but as of this moment the cheapest I can get through them is via e-bookers,quoting £273-00 for the 2 weeks I require.
Will definately have a look a what you have come up with.

Its amazing I have managed to book ret flights with EasyJet for less than £50 per person, yet car-hire is becoming once again a bug-bear.

Thanks again for your help.

I am going to Milan in a couple of weeks, flying Ryanair from Luton to Bergamo. I too tried looking at the 'biggies', but eventually looked at what Ryanair had to offer.

I am picking up an economy car on Friday at 09:30 and dropping it off around 09:00 on the Sunday. The quotes from the 'biggies' were around £80 - 100, but Ryanair's came at at less than £60. As far as I can tell, that is an all-inclusive price, but of course, I could be in for a bit of a shock in terms of excess when I get there. Watch this space.... I will let you know how I get on.

Another good site is www.ebookers.com

Go to the car hire link to get a quote. I've used them before and it cost me 30% less than Hertz.

Have finally booked via www.carhire3000.co.uk.

They were the cheapest for the period I requested £361 from 7/8 to 30/8.

I have to say that I haven't founda nything cheaper than Hertz - if you join their No1 club (which anyone seems to be able to do) - you'll get discounts and they store your details so you don't have to re-enter absolutely everything every time.

4 days from Ancona was £58

Thanks-will have a look at that for future reference.I get the impression that if you book via smaller towns/airports prices become more competative.

Strange as it may sound - the last time we did a fly/drive to Italy we booked our car rental via Argos! They were a little pricey to start off, but when I told them I'd been offered a better deal through Hertz, they nmatched the price and gave us a free upgrade.

Unfortunately I have no idea what the number is, but I'm fairly confident you could find it easily from one of the countless leaflets in the store whilst waiting for what seems like an eternity for the staff to bring your goods out!

Well blimey, 2 minutes on Yahoo and:
Hire - 0870 400 0020
Airport parking - 0870 737 7677
Holiday money - 0845 609 0030

....who knows if they are any good?!?!?

someone else mentioned it - www.carhire3000.com they are the cheapest

then if you travel alot insure your excess - I save at least £20 a time on the excess

www.insurance4carhire.com

on my first rental I saved £50 - the cost of the insurance!

I am a member of the Hertz so called discount scheme but I have found a company to undercut them:-

www.car-rental-worldwide.com

When you log into the site it comes up as Nova car rental, they are based in Ireland and act as agents, have used them twice with no problems, due to pick a car at Rome from them on Sunday.

My next 5 day rental is £99 - with the one just mentioned quoted cost me £122, so using my insurance excess - in just over 2 rentals I have paid for my insurance

Have a look at www.ebookers.com and then click on car hire and select your location and dates to get a quote.

I've used them before and they weren't too bad.

I have used www.webcarhire.com a few times as they seem to offer quite reasonable prices for some main car hire companies. Note that they offer a daily rate only, so sometimes weekend or full week 'specials' are better directly from the company. Prices in Italy are from under €30 per day.

Also I used to always take out additional insurance when picking up a hire car, as the excess is usually quite high (€500). This was always quite expensive costing anything up to £12 a day. However I now have an insurance policy which covers me for any excess claims. It lasts for 1 year and only cost £50 and it covers me as a main driver and any additional drivers in the same car. If you have an accident, you pay the excess then claim it back - I haven't had to do it yet so don't know how easy it is. But by not having to take out additional insurance with the car hire companies I have already saved myself many times the cost of the policy. The company is www.insurance4carhire.com.

This seems a good price for car hire.Try this site
www.budget-italy.com These are based in Ireland.I got a fantastic deal for a
Opel Estate 1.7 Diesel for four days £122.This is an all in price so their are no excesses to pay for an accident. The paperwork arrives as Budget and I collected from Rome Ciampino on the 25/07.They ask you to collect from the Avis office.Very efficient service and I got the new model which ws only a couple of months old.

If you book by phone and tell them you're in the AA, [I am - but they never check] they give you 15% off. If you ask them, they'll give you a code that allows you to get the discount when booking on-line

Thanks so much for these tips. Just got the excess insurance - well worth it if you make more than one trip a year. I'd not even heard of that before.
We fly into Ancona and out of Pescara quite often and the problem we have is only Hertz open on Sundays and you can't pick up a car from anyone else after 1300 on Saturdays - the flight arrives at 1330..
Argus offer great prices and a better choice of cars - it seems almost impossible to hire an automatic in Le Marche - but they don't open to meet the flights. Bonkers.
I wonder if Hertz do a discount for RAC members as well? I'm off to join their no 1 club right now...

Cheers

Argos car rental is just Holiday Autos - there are a lot of companies that use Holiday Autos as the background service.

But how do people get on booking in Ryanairs more obscure airports and not booking Hertz..? (on a Sunday)

We have always used Holiday Autos, who will cover the excess for (I think) £2 per day.

We have only had one upset, at Pisa two weeks ago, when we found Jet 2 com use them on their website.
Two Jet2 flights arrived with about 20 minutes in between, and the Hertz desk had at least 30 people queing.
Took 40mins to get to the front.
They did have four assistants on.

There was no-one at any other desk.

As regards cost, HA were cheaper than carhire 3000, who don't cover the excess.

Generally though we've had no problems, but I'm going to check who the airline points to in future.
