Lets face it the flare throwing problem in Italy is nothing new it just happened to take place at a game with a massive profile and big Europe wide tv audience. The flares have been part and parcel of the tifo displays in Italy and other European countries for many years, even Shamrock Rovers in Dublin use them. I am not sure how many injuries have been caused by them over the years but i guess there have been many. I love to see the colourful displays before the games and the flares are very much part of it all. I do think Inter got off quite lightly but EUFA need big clubs like them competing in the Champions League and it would be a shame to miss out on seeing the top players in Europe competing. By the way Forza who do you support in England ?.

ciao a tutti
so what in effect we are saying is that because inter are a big club and eufa need them to be playing in the competition then there fans can get away with just about anything they want to, in my opinion the big clubs run football as it is and the authorities are running scared of them, whilst i agree it is very difficult for a football club to control all of its fans but lets face it this is just the tip of the iceberg with italian ultras, alot of the violence is never reported in the international press, unless of course it is english fans causing the trouble,( i do not for 1 minute condone any violence at any football match) i go week in week out to matches in the uk and these days very rarely do i see violence at my club.lets face it if you let people into football matches with anything that can be used as a weapon, missile then there is always the temptation to use that object( albeit by a minority) if things are not going right on the pitch as witnessed in this game. ciao marco

Have to say that I still think the punishment is fair - playing games behind closed doors causes financial hardship for the club and for the ultras not being allowed to see there team it will hit home very hard.
As I said earlier though - I do think that a years ban from the CL should result if the Inter tifosi cause trouble again.
I think that you have to see the games in Italy to appreciate the culture with flares - I certainly would not want to see them banned or the supporters turned into the tame prawn munchers we now have in Englands top divsions. Grounds in italy are still cauldrons of passion - unlike our own now sterile grounds, even Elland Road these days is prawn munchers paradise !!
By the way rober Siena have just taken the lead versus Milan

Just got home and checked the results :D . Superb result for I Roburonne, that has got to go down as one of the best results in their history and it has lifted them out of the relegation places at last, we may just survive and that result will have instilled a real belief in the players. Vital win for Brescia too, a defeat would have disastrous today and it still keeps everything tight at the bottom.
As for the prawn sandwich brigade !!. Well we even have a few at Notts County would you believe but most of them usually venture over Trent Bridge to see that other team that used to be famous once :D . I would hate to see the flares dissapear from the Italian stadiums, maybe someway could be found to control their use and prevent scenes like the San Siro last week. Being a Leeds fan can't have been much fun over the last two seasons, such a big club with big expectations, i cannot see it being too long before you are back in the Premiership. As for Notts Division 1 would be good right now, maybe next year :)

The punishment was complete cop-out. Inter have a history of crowd trouble but they are still allowed to compete in next year's competetition - what do UEFA need to see for them to take a stand. One other point that no-one sems to mentioned. If Inter have to play their games behind closed doors, does this not punish the teams they are playing against too. They also will have to play the game in a competely false atmosphere of an empty stadium. Surely a more apt punishment would be to play both legs of their games at the opposition ground with no tickets available for Inter?

I think EUFA believe they are making a stand but we all know that they want clubs of the size and stature of Inter involved and it would take ( God forbid) another disaster on the scale of Heysel for a ban to happen, although if it were a smaller , less powerful club i am sure it might be different. Bigger clubs involved means bigger TV revenue, bigger sponsorship and bigger crowds and to be honest that seems to matter more than anything these days.

Never thought before about the poor old away team I must admit - i presume that Inter will have to pay a proportion of the Stadiums capacity to them in way of compensation - but that is not clear - so your point is correct
I must say though that when two of our fans died in Turkey - EUFA did well bugger all - so the fact that they are doing something in this case is far from a kop out.
as for the "mighty" Brescia - yes a fantastic win for us, especially against the old enemy from Bergamo, sweet justice as well 90th minute twice taken penalty - but it is still a long long way to go

I think UEFA have just about got it right for a change. No-one was killed, thankfully, and there don't appear to have been any serious injuries.
UEFA failed to act when two Leeds supporters were killed in Istanbul, just as they had failed to act a few years prior to that when Manchester United supporters, some of them in their 70s, were dragged from their hotel beds and taken to the police station and imprisoned for several weeks without charge. If they had acted then, then maybe, just maybe, the lives of two supporters could have been saved.
I mentioned in another post that I was at the San Siro in 1999 when Man United played Inter and both the United players and supporters were pelted with fruit and bottles of waters. There were plenty of flares then, but I don't remember any being thrown on the pitch.
I can't see how the Italian FA's new rule can work. It's not difficult for a fan to get in amongst the opposing fans - it happens frequently at Old Trafford in the corporate areas, and supporters don't seem to be searched when going in to club grounds in England. In a recent FA Cup game, an idiot amongst the Man United supporters was clearly seen on television throwing a flare onto the pitch at Southampton. Man United were winning at the time and presumbably, if the Italian FA's rule had been adopted in England, Southampton would have been awarded the win and Man United knocked out of the FA Cup. With the number of TV cameras at football grounds these days, it would be easy to identify the supporter concerned and they should be banned for life from every football ground in the country.

Janie as per normal you speak complete and utter sense - on the same trip one manchester United supporter was knived and partially paralysed - UEFA did nothing - just as they did nothing when we were there - and please NO ONE post that it was brought on by us - I was in Taksim that night, English yes, ignornat of local custom, yes to some extent, provoking trouble No WAY - as for the lies and filth that have been put out since ............
I truly fear for the supporters of Milan, Chelsea Liverpool whichever have to endure the football Atmosphere in Instanbul this year for the sake UEFA's continued ignorance to the problems in Turkey
As for the Italian rule it complete and utter barmpot !!!!!!
ciao a tutti, i have to disagree the punishment handed out to inter is another typical cop out by the so called football authorities, in my opinion the only way that the inter fans would have been taught a lesson is by not letting them compete in european competition for a year, this is not setting an example to anyone all you are doimg is punishing the football club financially, and this is a drop in the ocean to big football clubs like this.
