I'm horrified.

Yet another attack by mindless bureaucrats on a way of life and what's more a move that is *bad* for the environment. Wood burners are carbon neutral, the carbon emissions are equal to the carbon absorbed by the tree while growing.

Electric ovens are pwoered from fossil fuel, and represent a net emission of carbon into the atmosphere.

Stupidity and waste on the part of Eurocrats.

I hope they don't get to stop me having a wood burning oven in my home.

Good old EU. You can always - but always - count on it to mess people's lives up. I still don't understand why we have to put up with something so corrupt and undemocratic. If the Italians have any sense they should ignore this directive and all the others.

I was sorry to hear that those restaurants and pizzerias are to be persecuted for using wood ovens. There's a super pizzeria we particularly like near our homestead which boasts a huge scalding wood oven for all to see - so definetly sterile, and their various pizzas are truly delectable tho' its their farinata which does it for me!

We also have a wood oven in our courtyard which is used for making bread, pizzas etc - but I understand...... that at least for now, these are not not affected by this law.

Are the powers that be afraid that too many trees will end up in the fire?

This caused me to wonder about those fast food machines and ice cream vans and where they stand legally? For starters, handling money and then touching food is not my idea of hygiene.

I have to say that in my opinion it should be non-commersial wood burning fires that should be banned, at least in urban enviroments. Here in Cagliari during winter months you choke on wood smoke and all your clothes smell of it due to the amount of wood fires heating houses.

Although I agree banning wood burning pizza ovens is a crime in itself.

On another forum this was all but discounted as an UL.

I do recall a similar intiative by the EC or EU against artisan cheeses - all cheeses had to be made from pasteurised milk, yet the majority of cheeses made across Europe are made from unpasteurised milk. People have chosen to ignore the directive and continue as they always have. Some brands of cheese have added a notice to their packaging to state that the product is unpasteurised, but that is the only visible concession to the regulation. Let's hope a similar attitude will prevail to this new directive if it turns out to be true.

this directive is a catchall which is aimed at reducing smog levels in italian cities.... they have problems with air quality.... and often close down whole cities for the day to private traffic ....or their somewhat strange effort of altenate year number plates being allowed in on some days.... a nightmare i guess for those that commute in their own cars.....

as regards private wood fires.... there are a lot here.... when you go into houses they often smell of that smokey flavour.... a homely smell for some....
.... and in the winter everyone has a fireplace or a stove burning....i have puzzled over the quetion posed by wiredeyes ... and here are my thoughts

solutions that might come in handy for those that find this unpleasant might be to secretley creep around at night spraying those offending wood piles in proximity to you with some delicate frgrance..... one pleasing to your sense of smell...

i know in england there are various miltary shops that sell ex ww2 gas masks and these might also come in handy on one of the colder days when everyone has their fire lit.....

.... and if anyone does invite you in to their house ... a good old fashioned wood peg on the nose might help....

as in all cases on this forum i am sure there will be plenty of other solutions offered...... much more subtle and effective than mine..... and maybe then if we do have visitors to our village in the winter we might have a stock pile at the roadside of the most effective form of smell repellant.... which those that wish can use.....

an interesting question to me .... if you live and own a house where you are is if the agent warned you of the hazard you are now facing and if not maybe you could sue.....

i have heard that italy intends to ignore this ban....... so dont worry too much...... about pizzas
