424 Liscari

We buy Liscari, also known as barba dei frati or barbetta dei frati from our local shop when we are in Italy and use it in salads. It looks like fat grass but tastes slightly sour/bitter.

Despite spending hours looking through various websites and trying to plough through assortd textbooks, I still haven't found out what type of plan it is. Does anyone recognise the description? One thing I have decided is that it definitely isn't the lettuce with the same name.

The name it is commonly sold under in the UK is Liscari Sativa. The only UK seed merchant that I know stocks it is vida verde (www.vidaverde.co.uk - check under salads). It's common name in Japanese is Okahijika or land seaweed.

I grew out some last year and they do very well in our climate.

Thanks, I had found "barba dei frati" in a seed merchant but it was lettuce, not liscari.
