Our weekly supermarket shop in Italy (Conad/Cityper/Tigre/Auchan/Coop as the mood takes us) comes to about EUR 35. It has hit as high as EUR 60 when we have guests. For comparison our weekly shop in the UK tends to hit £75.
If anything we eat better in Italy, i.e. we take more shopping bags home.
If poverty becomes an issue there's always Eurospin.

If you are still considering Sanremo you will find it less expensive to live a little inland from the coast. Certainly restaurant meals and renting accommodation will cost less and are often exceptionally good value with local ingredients. There is however a great variety available, plenty of modest and good value establishments alongside those for more special occasions.

If you are comfortable on your income in the UK you would be very comfortable here in Italy. We reckon here in our region of Northern Lazio that generally it is about a third cheaper than the UK. How much you actually need is obviously very personal but hope this helps a little. If you have not decided on a region to move to yet, we can highly recommend the Viterbo area. I moved here because I decided that I couldn't afford to live inthe UK on my early pension, it is easy to live here with costs around 2/3 of the UK, you must accept though that your expenditure, while much lower on GOOD food, will be higher than UK on heating for the time it is needed, you must assimilate to the Italian way of living over the winter months.

Hi, we spent 1500 euros a month, food is much cheaper, electricity is blinking expensive, about 100 € a month, heating the house is very expensive.
