There was an interesting artcile by John Murphy in the June issue of Italy. It concludes next month.
John offers some good insights into how the system works. Perhaps Ronald can place them on the web site for all to see as I guess some of you don't get the chance to read the magazine.

Thanks for that, I have the mags but only ever have a quick flick. With 4 kids and a business to run I never get the time to sit and inwardly digest.
I'll dig them out and have a look tonight over a glass of vino when they are all tucked up in bed ;)
Thanks
Paula

regarding the grants for female entrepreneurs i only have a contact for the abruzzo region.... all regions will have their own way of proceeding on this .... its a national initiative but more especially in ruarl areas and also those with high unemployment the abruzzo contact email address is
leggiregionaliabruzzo@sviluppoitalia.it... they publish a booklet in italian for this region detilaing grants and employment initiatives... hasten to add not building grants...
one thing to bear in mind ... never sink your money into a project with the promise of the grant being easy to get.... as mr joseph will often comment.. "buyer beware" make sure everything is lined up first

I have so far been unsuccessful in accessing information on grants for development but did learn (how factual it is I do not know) that no grants are accessible unless you have been resident in the country for 3 years or more.
I would however be grateful if someone could verify this for me.

My agent gave me the usual "easy grants" bit when I was buying this house, I luckily didn't rely on the assurance... I have heard much the same thing about the three year ruling, but, that was related to Agritour development, I'm not interested in turning my home into a boarding house though, but am seeking advice on grants for tree planting, so, am developing contacts within coldiretti, comune and, soon, corpo forestalle, so, given another decade or so (excluding August's of course) I should have some answers...

The person to ask regarding grants for planting trees or farming grants is the local "agronomer" (ask your neighbours for recommendations). This person will know about all the grants, what is suitable to grow on your land and will also do all the paperwork.
At the moment there are grants here where we are for planting oaks for truffles and non-fruiting cherries for furniture making. Oaks take 7-8 years to give truffles and cherries 25 years (ish). You cannot cut the oaks down for 99 years, however! We weren't told about any 3-year rule but we also didn't ask.

There are tons and tons of grants available.
agricultural things you ask at the "coldiretti"
You can find info (in italian ) about other grants at the camera di commercio.... they have a site listing all the possibilities.
Nobody gives anything for free. Most of the time the grants are 40% of the costs or maybe even more but first you have to put in the cash and then eventually, maybe they give it back to you.
Most of the time they give grants to people that already have an existing operation.
If you go to them and say "I would like to open an agrturismo" they will just look at you and laugh .. or tel you all about there cousin who is a general contractor and can give you the "best" prices!
Most of the time friends or relatives of whoever is processing the applications get the money.
If you have money and friends in the right places you can get grants - if not you can basically forget it.
everyone talks about these grants and they are even mentioned in newspapers... articles published on various new schemes either thru eu funding or as you have said regional grants.... there are even grants for women setting up a bussiness so you could bear that in mind when deciding whose name to register it in....
thats the positive bit.... to get these grants is almost impossable now unless you know someone... if you take a diy route to this they will take in your application and as their office filing system incudes a waste paper bin it might well end up there
when you are buying a property and talk to agents...of whatever ilk you will be given a very detailed description of what is available in the grant system ... they will quote you the womens bit... point out local agriturismo... and new plantings of nut trees.... quote this presidential decree or this type of grant under this new law ... thats if you have plans for turning your house into a hotel/b and b ... or whatever
and really thats as far as you can get by yourself....
there is a way.... you have to get a politically active ... either geometra architect who knows someone in the regional or local government... a proactive mayor in your commune .... its this that will get you the grant ... you have to realise there is alimited amount of funding and what there is goes towards who knows who... come election time it is very important that the right people have been allocated whats available....
for example each year the commune here gives presents to the children on jan 6th... each year the current mayor makes a speeh about why his party has got the better present to give and how much they are doing for us ... all hese children from 4 10 sit listening.. well sort of.... so if they will bother doing that they will surely want a lot back if you have just managed to get an e100,000 grant from them
we have another commune next door... there is a very good mayor there... he has a small commune but has managed to get lots of grants and is restoring the village centre including a massive house of 36 rooms to turn into a tourist centre.... he has built a new hostel... has another building restoration on the go with grant available up to 250,000 euro ...
another geometra.. politically active keeps build agriturismo still ... when these have realistically gone out of fashion as grant recipients in general because so many people abused that particular grant... however he is politically active within his commune.... will be a mayor for sure in five or so years time
so my advice is make sure whoever you buy off knows someone ... or whoever you get to do your build the same ... and go on from that point
