Once you are resident though, they cease to be friendly, their service is limited and cover expensive, they will only do 2 free tows and any services at busy times charged at normal garage rates, service may suit you with a relatively modern car, but, read the small print, still expensive. There is also Punto Blu which seems to cover the Autostrada's and something Mondiale which is quite big around Europe.

many thanks for all your help
The best company to call is The Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI), FIA and AIT member, operates a breakdown service on all roads, tel. 116.
This is a great service that offers free tows to visitors driving in Italy with foreign licence plates or with a car rented at the Rome or Milan airports. If you are in a hire car you must show your plane tickets and the rental contract if you want to get the service free of charge.
