898 The best way to send stuff out to Italy?

Umm it seems odd to buy Ikea in the UK to send it to Italy when you will have to pay a lot for transport and also have to pay a higher price in the first place.

We send stuff backwards and forward often between UK and Italy and the price you will pay depends partly n how much of a rush you are in. IIRC a pallet costs about £250 one way. We use Bartolini, but if ou search this forum you will find a few people offered to move goods (at a charge) from the UK to Italy.

1) Don't forget Ikea now has 11 stores in Italy (find out where at [url]http://www.ikea.com/ms/it_IT/)[/url]. You could spend a fine day browsing, snaffle the obligatory plate of meatballs, then get them to deliver. We've done this before - delivery of two sofas from the Florence store to our slightly out-of-the-way place near Lucca. Don't think the delivery charge was too exhorbitant, and no problems with logistics.

2) I've been building a list of part-load websites plus "van with man" type operations running from the UK to Italy - if you're interested, drop me a personal message.

Thanks for your replies. Mike I have pm'd you. Do you think Ikea would deliver from Rome or Bologna to Le Marche? Its a long way..
Do pallets get delivered to home addresses or are they left at a central location - sorry if these are daft questions, I'm new to this game.

Pallets - if you pay for a pallet to be delivered it is sent to where you tell them to deliver it. I'd be careful what you choose to send this way though, packing safely is your responsibility and you have have problems claiming for damages if someone sticks a forklift fork through the package.

Ah yes good point with large sheets of glass.
Reckon I need to do a lot of sums on cost of hiring vans, driving ourselves with a load of stuff vs shipping it, flying out and car hire just when we are there. Will investigate the 'man with van' options you suggested too.

Don't want to worry anyone - but just a quick note to make sure whoever moves your stuff is covered insurance-wise for the contents. Apparently van and lorry muggings are not unknown in Italy so that makes insurance a) essential and b) expensive for drivers to get - so they may be tempted not to bother...

Good heavens. Is this really something that happens often?
Mind you I'm hardly shifting Picassos around Europe, anyone mugging my van would be sorely disappointed.
Can you recommend anyone that is insured for say items worth a couple of hundred quid? Its more the value of the frames mostly!

Not sure - this piece of insight came from a firm which proudly HAS that sort of insurance - so may have been indulging in a spot of competition-bashing. Did get me thinking, though!

We're looking into sending personal stuff eg clothes, shoes to Sicily as we're going to live there for 8 months and baggage allowance won't be enough - any man with vans you know about going near Sicily ?

I hired a van in England took some furniture in the van (it was full) then did a trip to IKEA rome from Abruzzo - I have a holiday home and needed to furnish it in a hurry so spent the months before I moved in collecting furniture etc in the uk - from every knife fork etc - would have loved to have had the time to shop in Italy!
the van hire in this country wansnt expensive .
IKEA do deliver from Rome but make sure if they deliver they have good directions and good Italian to give them directions - one of the reasons I took a van - learning the language fast - had too!

I did the sums and if you can get a cheap ferry crossing and a good priced van then it works out cheaper - we had the van for over 3 weeks - no problem with the insurance it was all included in the van hire - also filled the van on the return with wine etc
if you are going in the summer the only problem was no air con in van.
had a holiday on the return trip via switzerland
great time- also used van in Italy to go to the tip buy washing machine etc

Hi have you found the lift for your belongs if yes how? And where are you going to live? I’m leaving UK to travel a bit. My dad lives in CT and I want ship some stuff there so I don’t have to worry about taking everything with me…

I may want to move some things to Calabria for September. Depending on method depends what. I would have clothes, shoes, books, files,microwave and maybe flat pack Shelves and some lovely pictures. Could have more stuff if price is right. If it is part of load or even post. Any info about man and van or other please.

If you've only got a couple of boxes - ie not a house move, then I've found Parcelforce Euro 48 a good bet.

Just sent 5 boxes to Le March from Surrey total 106kgs for £193 and they collect, so no taking down to the post office. Takes 4 working days (OK so they delivered a day late) and arrived fine nothing broken or missing. Each box/carton must not exceed 30kgs or be more than 1.5m girth.:rolleyes:
