I am moving to Naples to teach English on in 3 weeks. Does anyone have any tips for me other than watch your bag?!!
well, do watch your bag, but mostly enjoy the city, you are so lucky!
Naples is one of my favourite cities in Italy... there is a thriving cultural life, very good night life, of course the food is beautiful...
Eat loads of pizza, pasta with tomato sauce, amazing, gnocchi fritti... le pastarelle... mmmmmmm lovely!
And if you will live there long enough you will pseak italian with an accento napoletano, it is so nice.
It is a city that has a very interesting history. It was under the Borboni until Italy was unified, and you can tell... if you do speak italian watch the old movies with Toto and peppino de Filippo... you'll get a feel for it.
I suppose the thing I love the most about Naples is te red coulour f the buildings...
But Naples is not only a charming city, it is a place with a lot of social problems: poverty, unemployment, violence, camorra,... laws are an opinion in Naples. this dicotomy makes it beautiful, interesting and alive.
You cannot get bored in naples!

Hi
I agree with what Latoca says, Naples also has a good transport system including the metro.
The problem with Naples and the surrounding area is the rubbish on the streets, they have been trying to get an incinerator for a while but no-one wants it on their doorstep, Germany takes a lot of their rubbish but are now cutting back.
As far as handbags are concerned be careful of people hopping on & off buses
and thieves on scooters, if you get your car hub caps nicked go down the market on Sunday morning and buy them back.
Having said that, enjoy Naples it has some super museums, art galleries and sightseeing in general. Get yourself a good street map and explore (if you have time). You can also go across the bay to Sorrento and the Amalfi coast, hop on a boat and visit the islands of Capri, Ischia etc, see the ruins of Pompei, Ercolano and a bit farther south the temples at Paestum, climb up Vesuvio or see the stunning scenery around Avellino and Benevento.
I just got back from Naples last friday week, my partners family live on the opposite side of Vesuvio.
Sorry I put in the gloomy side of Naples but as you can see the pluses far outweigh the minuses, I just hope you can afford the time to see all you can, you won't be dissappointed I assure you, and maintain a sense of humour.

Naples is a great city. You do need to exercise some caution in parts of the city, most notably do not have a camera hanging around your neck or anything else (including handbag) that is tempting to a would be thief.
The one thing I would suggest is that you get to know the locals - going around the city with a native opens up areas of the city that you would otherwise never see.
I know those of us that love Naples are a distinct minority but I do feel that it has oodles of charm, history, and excellent food to please any Italophile.

A lot of visitors to Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii get the 'watch your bags' message drummed into them on the transfer from the airport - and this is intensified if anyone is thinking of making a trip to Naples - a shame!
But doesn't this message also get broadcast in most tourist resorts - wherever they are in the world - to a greater or lesser degree?
All tourists in busy spots need to be reminded that things might not be like they are at home (bear in mind that visitors to some European cities might have hopped onto a budget airline flight for the first time and have never before stepped out of their local neighbourhood so wouldn't expect to meet a problem - so the same would apply if they travelled to Newcastle or Cardiff or Glasgow for instance).
It's a case of being aware and exercising the appropriate caution.
My hope is that every traveller will be suitably prepared, not become overly worried and be able to enjoy their trip regardless (let's hope nothing and no-one stops us from stepping out and experiencing the differences the rest of the world can offer!)

I have been warned to watch my bag on visits to Milan, Florence, Rome and Venice. In Lido di Jesolo, we were told we should keep the hotel windows closed because of the gypsies that climb up the balconies and sneak into your room at night to steal all our worldly goods. Are these places so very different to any other large city in the world?

Once in Naples drop us a line and let us know how you are getting on. There are a couple of good places to eat that I can recommend, more by location than name, so better to do so once you are in the city.

Hi everyone....2 friends and myself are flying into naples in 2 Sundays....we are staying in Positano on the Amalfi coast....now we are rethinking our itinerary. We would like like to stay in Naples for a night or 2, either at the beginning or end of our trip....we would also like to stay in Capri for a night or 2....we arent sure when is he best time of the week to stay where - nightlife, beach, shopping, dining etc. is the weekend better to be in the city - Naples or in Capri?
