952 Dumps

Does anyone know about how to dispose of household waste i.e. old washing machines, ovens, sofas etc? Is there a local municipal dump system in place like here in the UK or do you have to arrange for a disposal company to come and get it?
Many thanks

Keep 'em coming old bob and you'll soon join the dizzy heights of us Gymkhana types !!!!!!!( can't even spell it ..let alone ride a horse properly !)

BUT, what a brilliant question....we are accumulating various large items for the tip and we've only been here 3 months ( i.e. Uk fridge gave up the ghost yesterday) Now have lovely shiny new one ( big thing with a marvelous ice tray/container to keep loads of ice cubes in !!!)..but old one to get rid of .

Yes indeed - or at least, there is in our bit. Gone are the days (though not that long gone, I gather) when this sort of stuff used to be chucked off the nearest hillside. Your local comune should be able to tell you where your closest is.

You might find, though, that they are only open for five minutes at a time on a day of the week without a "y" in it. I exaggerate, of course - ours is open three days a week for two hours in the middle of the day.

I remember once asking a neighbour why it was so restrictive, and he told me it was to discourage people from using it too much.

Mike

You should call your comune and they will tell you what t do.
In Torino, for example, you can call them and tell them you will leave a big item close to your cassonetto and they will charge you with a small fee... it changes from place to place the best way is to call them!

Paola

Paola is right.
the service can vary from comune to comune.
In some places the street sweepers come to your house and pick up the material, in other you have to bring it to a collecting center or close to a cassonetto.
The fee too is variable, but it's normally low

Thanks for the replies.

We have just returned to Blighty after a couple of weeks R & R (Rip out & Renew). Discovered a thing called a Discardica, which is essentially a municipal dump. The opening times are indeed a little limited; Wednesday 16:30 - 20:00 & Saturday 08:30 - 12:30, for example in Morsano al Tagliamento, PN.

They work very much like the English system only a little more hap hazard (piles of crudely sorted rubbish deposited in various sections of a scrap of land). However we found the chap from the local commune, the overseer, to be a very nice bloke who even shared a glass or two of wine with us after our eighth trip.

The dump was signposted as a Piazzola Ecologica (or very similar). However whilst on a mission to buy yet more de-muffa spray, we did see a sign simply stating Discardica.

So in conclusion there are municipal tips that accept all the usual things that are sent to the tips in the UK (including waste oil for those that are mechanically minded)

As someone else who uses "quite a bit" of this, consider making your own. The solution for cleaning muffa from plastered walls is dilute bleach and a dash of sodium hydroxide. I use about 10% bleach and 0.5% sodium hydroxide. It's as good as if not better than the commercial stuff.

Umm but don't use the above mix on cloth unless you want it all white.

What a great idea and it will save a fortune to boot, many thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try.

At the risk of looking completely dense (won't be the first time) I just have to ask - what is de-muffa spray????

Answers on a postcard, please

Lesley

Anti mould spray, our place gets covered in the stuff if left closed up for too long.
