Does anyone know where to buy sand suitable for pointing anywhere near Aulla? All we seem to find is very coarse? :)

its oftn more difficult to buy sand here than any other material...they havent got around to dumpey bags or even much choice on sand in the diy places... we use a local builders merchant with a small lorry.... you tell him what you want the sand for and he will give you the right grade.... but you are talking tons.... the other thing is to go there with your own sacks and buy it like that....

failing the above there are several prepacked materials you can use from marborite which is suitable and comes in various colors to other different coded materials.... ie KC1 is a lime cement mortar with sand and if you are not doing much work a bag or two (40kg)of this might be suitable..check with the merchant.. if you go into the builders merchant again you will find a vast stock of different bags ... the good thing is that they generally have the descriptions and uses printed in several languages which helps if italian is a problem....

if its an older property i would suggest you use the lime based type products which allows a certain amount of breathing to take place with the walls and helps prevent damp.... cement only products are prone to sealing damp within walls and creating interanl damp patches....

remember even with rendering or pointing of outside walls you might well be wise to inform the commune you are undertaking this work.... every one will tell you no permission is required but the fact is that you can be informed on and fined for not doing so and for this sort of work a simple form is filled in and you do not have to pay....
