1399 Free Italian Lessons??

Ah well!, being an english teacher (as a foreign language) - UK policy - Asylum seekers, refugees, multi-cultural integration. You might find similar in Italy (for italian) but it will not be backed with the enormous amounts of money that the UK is currently putting into such projects???

I don't know specifically, but maybe it's worth asking at your local townhall in Italy. I do know that in Spain (Costa del Sol) the local commune offer a whole range of classes at reduced rates, including Flamenco for beginners;- )

The Spanish language classes are very popular and you have to queue for ages to sign on when it's enrollment day. A course of lessons works out at 2 euros a lesson - extremely good value.

I've been told that the lessons are heavily subsidised to encourage foreign nationals to assimilate into the 'Spanish way of life' as quickly as possible.

Maybe there is something similar in Italy. Worth asking anyway?

There are free Italian lessons provided by some comunes. They are run as and when the comune provides the money. I go to some in Amandola. The class is about a 50:50 mix of English and Polish students.

Don't know if it helps you but many LDS (Mormon) churches in Italy offer language lessons - either Italian for immigrants or English for Italians - these are all free. I know this was done in Palermo and in one branch in Naples, and probably happens in other areas of Italy as well.

I can confirm that the Comune provides free Italian language courses in Palermo. They are 90 minutes in duration, twice per week. Being in Palermo the vast majority of students are sub Saharan African in origin (mainly from Ghana and Nigeria). The upside of this is that they all speak perfect English which is a blessing in a town that has a very low level of English language penetration.

Finding this free course was not easy, it took me about three months of asking various Comune offices and receiving the usual blank stares back from Information officers. But I believe that most comunes that are faced with significant immigration, both legal and clandenstine, have such courses.
