1504 A Glaswegian's infatuation with Napoli

I guess that's the first time I've ever actually described myself as a Glaswegian, but since I do live here, it may be appropriate. Anyway, I digress... My name is Colin, and this is my first post to Italy Magazine. Indeed, I just found it today at work when I ought to have been... well... doing what I am paid for, not browsing the internet. In 2001 I met a fantastic girl from Napoli and thus began my love affair with the city. Sadly, her and I are no longer together but my passion for Napoli remains undiminished. It is because of this that I have reached a potentially life-changing decision. It is my intention to, by the time I turn 25 (next June) be permanently based in Napoli and working there full time. That is, myself, my Land Rover, and my dog. I'm about to commence Italian lessons so that I have some language skills behind me when I go, as all I can currently say are an array of phrases which aren't repeatable in polite company. I'll be studying for a TEFL before I go, and plan to get a job teaching English grammar. This is a complete career switch; indeed, I will be giving up my career here. Still, I consider that a small sacrifice. Life is too short to spend it worrying about deadlines, accounts, money and your job. I have many questions to ask regarding relocation to Napoli; questions which I will post in the appropriate fora. I beg your forgiveness if they have been covered elsewhere but hope that I can get some much-needed advice here. That ends my introduction, I think. I look forward to talking with you. Regards Colin Glasgow

Colin
Since no-one else seems to have issued a warm welcome to you (as far as I can guess, the usual eagle-eyed greeters are all busy planning for a star-studded celebrity night out in Carovigno) I'd like to say how much I enjoyed your enthusiasm for Napoli.
Have to admit I don't share it, though. Much as the centro storico is very beautiful, I'm afraid much of Naples seems to me a bit like an abandoned outside toilet, despite the faded grandeur of its 19th Century buildings.
I know that many people love Naples, finding it romantic and exciting. Your message is a cheering example of that. So, as I say, I wish you good luck and welcome.

worth remembering,and educational too. enjoy.

Thank you for the welcomes.

EddieB: I find it somewhat hard to give a quantifiable reason as to why I love Napoli... I just do. It's (in my opinion, anyway) a captivating place and there is nowhere else quite like it that I have found yet.

Sweetpeg: If I can make it happen, 2006 will indeed prove to be a very exciting and life-changing year for me!

Giovanni: "Proper" just about sums it up.

I am glaswegian and Italian too...

Good luck with Naples, I am sure you will love it , it is an amazing city!

colin,i really like naples too.the travel editor of the independant was on t.v last week and described naples as -the best city in the med -so you are in good company as i suppose he has seen most of the others.

I love Naples..I live 3 hours south of there but usually fly out thru the Naples airport to the States and have to say the airport is the greatest. Easy checkins, not that big just perfect for starting your holiday with out all the hassle of big time airports. The people are sooo nice in Naples, down to earth and not snobby like some cities in Italy as I should know, as the one near me is just that! Good luck and make your dreams come true.
