Phones are tapped in England as well. When I worked for BT, special branch were allowed to go into exchanges anywhere in England and place a tapping device on the main numbering frame, that's before the digital era, now it will be even more sofisticated. Remember also Charles and Diana's mobiles were tapped!!! Big brother is everywhere, in all countries, George Orwell was a great visionary.

I’m slowly recovering from a mega flu during wich I started to suspect that a toxic fever curse was sended over me from Italy because I placed the detonator (1st post here) in john the abbruzians nuclear bomb (toxic post) – at least so it seemed when you barely could follow the speed of scare post last Saturday. That didn’t have anything to do with debate or discussion, it was like a mass rage of a LYNching :) :) gang over couple of poor guys.
But seriously, if most of the posts were written in serious meaning and emotionally uncontrolled the message they sended was that accurate, posts with negative matters wouldn’t be liked. But the forum has plenty of that kind of material that every day somebody
could be insulted or fed up.
Even quarreling can some times be entertaiment, the rage posts were very low quality so I wonder if it could be possible to keep the same attitude with Italy as people, especially in Italy, (usually) have with their babies: you LOVE it and yet take care of the shit part too because otherwise Georges famous purple sunglasses are on all the time.
I didn’t actually have an opinion in the tapping case, but just wanted to give a different subject to discuss or joke about (as was the first reaction) to those members (IF INTERESTED IN) who doesn’t have any renovation project going on and maybe would be interested in different social matters.
Anyway if one has to say something about the article and despite everybody knows that every country has phone tapping, we are talking here huge differences with UK and Italy having about same population of 60 million and UK tapping 3.000 phones and Italy (another EU nation) doing the same to 30.000.000 phones…. I would call that major ITALIAN THING if concerns half of a nation. Ofcourse it’s not about “I don’t care if they listen my recipes…etc”, it’s about an outrage insult against italians civil rights because this can’t be explained by the terror threats and following the M-people.
But on the otherhand what do I care, I’ll move there part time or full time anyway immediately when it’s possible.
Paul :)

Doesn't gee_see_aitch_cue have a way of listening in to millions of calls a day and electronicaly picking out keywords in umpteen languages whereon a red light goes off and an operator listens in ... or is that just urban myth? Sorry about my esturian phonetical spelling for the letter H but you can't be too careful.

i found your post informative.... and i can most probably explain the difference...but hesitate to reply because it seems that if i mention something or other all hell breaks loose or it turns into lets see who can call me frazer from something called dads army or in the past a favorite was some person with one foot in the grave.... and i dont know why but it then seems that some people that might have some sort of relevant input get put off or worried.... sometimes private messages arrive agreeing or whatever.... anyway the cause of the discrepancy is in reality the organised crime here and the battle against it.... you will most probably find that most modern western countries will have put pressure on italy in any case to tap into the phones...the drug enforcement agencies...and not only that since terrorism became such a big issue the trade in arms by especially the sacra corona unita which they use for heroin payments to the albanians... about 60 % of it comes in to europe via this route... and the links between the unita, the albanian syndicates and the terrorist muslim organisations in which drugs are exchanged for arms has caused even more concern in national governments and put even more pressure on italy to find out what is going on ... so i presume the figures will get higher ... again recently the regional vice president of calabria was assasinated and there as usual will be a new drive against that version of the mafia...and more phone tapping.... but in essence your last sentence is right ... but whats so scary about knowing the ins and outs of all of italy

... talking of Orwell!
I read a very intriguing article a couple of days ago in a free, fairly good newspaper you get on Edinburgh buses. It was about computer printers! Apparently most computer printers are designed to leave a trace on a page you printed off - invisible to the naked eye! Sounds a bit like invisible ink but apparently this enables government departments, police, whoever, to trace printed materials back to you! Not sure how it should work in practice, but I wasn't surprised! Anything goes these days...

I heard that too and also similar with emails. Try sending two emails at the same time, one with provocative words in (assasination, senior figures name ....etc. ) and see which one arrives first!
