1762 Anyone feeling competitive?

Hello everyone,

First all let me say how happy I am that we've reached 1200 members already! You will also be happy to know that the forum is due for an overhaul that should make things faster and easier for all of us as well as provide some new features for us to play with!

The 1001th member - Carol Edwards - is currently enjoying her full Italy Mag prize (subscription, calendar, t-shirt) and it seems that prize got us into a prize-giving mood.

Now, the question is what type of competition should we have to give prizes away and are you at all interested in taking part. Here are some ideas we've had so far that we would like to get started soon.

1. Ma che bello (o che brutto)!!! - You send your most interesting photos in and we post them in a gallery. Every month we have a vote for the best photos of the month before with the winner getting some wonderful Italy Mag t-shirt or calendar, but most importantly the title of best Italy photographer of the month

2. Non ci crederete! - You won't believe it! - You send your stories that illustrate life in Italy. Both good and bad and everything in between. The best story gets a prize (as always chosen by you through votes).

You are more than welcome to suggest others!

Best Italian recipe

All for it - as long as its an 'Italy' calendar, and not a 'Tuscany' calendar

Definitely the photo competition - being new to the site I looked everywhere for photos and couldn't find any!

Good ideas Ronald. I think that those of us blessed with the opportunity to submit photos of Italy would have a slightly unfair advantage over readers in England who'd be posting photos of rainy Tesco car parks in February, but I get the general idea.

Just one point of disagreement: I don' think that the option 'I'm too busy working to have fun' has any place in a poll about Italy ;-)

Try Google Images ([url]http://www.google.co.uk/images)[/url]. They've got 500,000+ images of Tuscany alone so that should get you started.

Could brighten up our lives here in blustery UK ... voting on nicest piccies might compensate a little bit for not being able to win that tempting (Tuscany?) calender... ;)

I'm all up for the photo shoot!

Well recommendations of hotels and resturants, as a section of the web-site might be a good idea, click on a map, get your area, write a review including marks out of 10 for service, ambiance and food. This way you get more real views of resturants instead of Mr Micheal Winnerio's guide, but extensive work so perhaps another time.

I was just chatting to someone about motorbikes, and I remembered that even at the puglian party we all said wouldnt it be nice if we had a place to put stupid piccies and events on the website, from all over Italy or even Italian Mag reunions in Blighty (if we have any), then people can put names to faces etc and have a laugh...no doubt at, on occasions, my most embarrassing pictures moments...anyone else agree? Just a thought.

I have an idea Ronald. Why don't you come up with a "secret location" somewhere in Italy. Have a thread called "Secret location", and post one clue per day until someone figures it out. The first person to email you with the "secret location" will get the prize.

You could make the clues tough enough to take some time to figure out.

This would be an excellent way to play a game and learn about different Italian cities and maybe a bit of history and geography as we're trying to guess the location.

hi greatscott,

believe or not I've actually been thinking of something similar.

Actually what I was thinking was to hide clues across the website - a kind of online treasure hunt. However that takes times and thought. So a thread on the forum would be a good way to start.

Will get that going soon - excellent idea, thanks!

Ronald

Hi Ronald,

My thought was to maybe set it up where the daily clues are on the top (like the polls) and we could discuss amongest ourselves about the clue and where we think it might be. You could read the daily threads and base your next clue on our discussion, and maybe to get us back on track if we're thinking and discussing in the wrong direction. Of course as we get closer to the ultimate location, we might be holding our cards a little closer to the vest. It'll be a group activity, with a winner too. I'm looking forward to hearing ideas from different members, there are some very smart people on this forum that can help us all try to figure it out.

Anyway, thanks for your support. Whatever, or however it turns out to be it should be a lot of fun!

Best wishes,
Dee (and John too!)

In respect to a photo comp, here would be my first entry, a sunset I took here in Sardinia last week

Simply stunning IMO, it was really breath taking.

 ...also what about 'themeing' ( is that a word !! )...i.e Sunsets..Festas...processions...beaches....pets.....ice creams.....even a 'comedy' one....the topics are endless....or you could set something quite difficult.....like 'old man on a bike '....( Alex get your bike out :D !!!!!)
Love photos of sunsets ....and just happen to have one over our Olive Grove !!!...but don't know how to get it on a post !!! :(

Apologies in advance for hijacking the thread :)

Lyn, go to 'post reply', type whatever, then scroll down a bit further to 'Manage Attachments'. Click on that button. You then get a pop up window. Click on the 'Browse' button and find the document. Open the file and, hopefully, hey presto! :)

Purtroppo, it seems that not everyone is granted privileges to post attachments.

It can be done though, as long as your see '[img] code is ON' right at the bottom of the page.

See?[/center]

You need to be a bit of a propeller-head with HTML and FTP-ing though.
Instructions here....

When I try to view your attached image I get the following -

WiredEyes, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation
--

However if I logout I can view it without problems.. :)

Bug or feature. :)

ALSO my permissions are less than some I think.

You may post new threads
You may post replies
You may not post attachments
You may edit your posts

How about the admin fixing this?

I would suggest that it is not a bug just a feature! And I would suggest that is nothing to do with your PC as you can see it when not logged on but, your "profile" as when you log back on you are not authorised, hope it is not Ronald being personal!! ;) ;)

Yeah I understood, I was just pointing out that it's a little annoying that as a member I am restricted more than a guest. :)

Me too!

Any chance of Ronald sorting this one out?
