1934 puglia people

my journalist friend has been really quick.
the today issiue of la gazzetta del mezzogiorno, the most important newspaper in puglia, there is an article (pag. 11) about this forum and the puglia and italianlovers.
it is a long (5 columns) and well written article.
it speaks about some of you, the smiths in puglia, paula hampson etc.
For those who are in puglia at the moment, they are still able to buy the gazette.
Meanwhile i'll ask her if it's possible to publish the article in the on line edition

Notaio,

We have a problem. I just visited the Mezzogiorno web site and this is one of the headlines "Mafia del Gargano: 11 arresti".. I guess John in Abruzzo will say "See I told you there is a Mafia in Puglia". There is no winning..

Nataio, how am I going to get a copy when I'm not there, boo hoo :( If we can get the article online that would be fantastic or is it possible to pay for a copy to be posted by the newspaper itself.....Thanks

Did you find the article? I looked at sections that propably could have it but didn't find.

I can't find it either because it seems to be filled with small ads for strange people advertising chestnut roasting and braziers!

for anyone who wants to read the article you will need to go to the mezzogiorno web site www.lagazzettadelmezzogiorno.it/GdM_homepage_03.asp?IDCategoria=1

nope, still didn't find it. Couldn't find edicola on the left of the home page, only a section marked In Edicola that appears to be about books

Now we start cooking, I tried the headlines on the left, like 'speciali' etc. Seems like the newspaper has limited the size of the pdf -window to a small rectangle to make more difficult to read (?) but it's manageable.

cant cut and paste pdf tried it sorry
Wouldn't it be easier to cut and paste it here.. perhaps with a translation for those who may want it? Or is that not allowed?

All I know is I breathed a big sigh of relief when I read it.. and as a token of my gratitude.. I may behave.. for a while anyway ;)

:) :)
Fame at last!! To make it readable, you can click on the little magnifying glass symbol to zoom in closer.

i`m going to get the file of the article from the journalist, so if someone isn`t able to read it on line, i`ll send it via email.
i`ve a copy of the newspaper too, so, with a scanner i might give a copy of it for those who like it.

I clicked on the headline itself and the whole thing was blown up to the left of the screen and then was able to print it off although I couldn't get all of it to print out :( I'm sure some computer tecky can get the whole article attached to a thread that we can all print out........come on lads ;)

Only saw this this morning...I doubt if i will have much luck but I'll see if I can get any copies ...when did the article appear ??

OK Have asked Babel to Translate and get this :-

That English were in love of Italy (and the Tuscany in particular) knew for a long time, but that multitudes of "maniaci" of the Puglia, ready selling itself all to London or in Ireland existed also to come living from we, perhaps innovation is one. The surprise is found on Internet, where they give to months groups of English chattano on the topic of the Puglia, who telling to live by now in a trullo, who asking lumi for like acquiring it. The health? "Here it is much best that in England", the fans write of the living to the South, not saving encomi also for the public school, the way of life and, immancabilmente, for the kitchen. It seems nearly that "very english style" of the house in wood in the campaign of the Sussex it has been transformed in "stone style", the architecture in stone of the trulli between the pugliesi ulivi. Tried to visit the situated Internet of "Italy Magazine", an English review that speaks about Italy and that it is defined "for lovers of all things italian": cliccando on "forums" us imbatte in the round tables on linens, those in which one sendes messages to us, converged to blows of megabyte and intavolano occasional arguments on the disparati topics more. Well, from weeks to lead a discussion it is the Puglia: an entire channel of messages s' intito it "The Smiths in Puglia" and, reading the several mail committees, history of English are discovered that they have left England in the name of Ostuni, Frank Martina, Otranto and other cities. A universe that converses in English taking care itself of the Puglia. Here the surgeon dentist whom he tells it are moved themselves gives beyond a year to Frank Martina: he is he to answer to the question on "like making to study in Puglia the sons of English", sbandierando the optimal level of the school attended from its daughters of 11 and 12 years. The answer opens the debate: is better then the Italian public school? Or - as mrs. from the Ireland suggests one - we must try the instruction to C house? Cliccando still on the messages that follow, emerges the other vicissitudes. An English family with three children of 7, 10 and 14 years tells its new life in Puglia; a sure Paula Hampson asserts that "Puglia is becoming the place to be" ("is becoming the place in which it must be"). Other videate, other messages: a professional who introduces itself with the nickname of "Tingle" speaks about the study with bought terrace to Ostuni; an other customer, than company "Italianfan" augurs good hunting to who tries house. And one shows oneself also mrs. that it announces to all its divorce: it leaves Southampton and it comes living in Puglia. Piovono auguries to its address. But how many are these immigrate you of the taste and the pleasure to reside between the ulivi? Yes, just the ulivi are a delle attractive of this sure well-off people that it arrives in airplane and not sulle rafts, not trying "Lamerica" as they made the Albanians, but perhaps chasing a coveted Italian well-being on the credit side. The ulivi are an other recurrent topic of the forum, with messages in which several the customers they tell who to have tried without happening to plant them in house and who it are attempted even in the domestic oil production! The fans of the Puglia discettano also of christmas traditions and every as well as s' it also threads some Italian, like what company "notary public" and standard to English who the panettone yes is christmas but not pugliese, while cartellate and the cakies of almond it are. And then it is spoken about heating: servants or not, ask those that are putting on house here from we. One of the answers: "To she stews is enough", enough one stews. Between the other questions, those of language, with vital doubts type "Finocchio is one offensive word or not". But English-pugliesi speak also about things series and as far as the hand to put to the pocketbook, they notice the taxations elevated on the purchases of the houses. A participant to the forum on linens asks: "and that he wants to say" system outlaw "", making to understand to have problems with the European norms. To times the arguments ignite on topics like "best the villa or the trullo" and the answers riscoprono still others afecionados to region that, also still having its true and just portale on linens (the Puglia Region is not launching alone hour the plan), one is found the insperata and "given" publicity rigorously english. Yes, because the lovers of the Puglia on linens sell all and arrive here, but they also remain always English, much to ask itself in the mail: "But like it is made to make to grow the Prato in Puglia".

Brilliant article so funny but no mention of the toilet situation or John's comments, toxic waste or Albanians or did I miss it.What luck for that Italian journalist to come across a bunch of loonies like us!

Becky
Possibly the Italian version is easier to understand eh?

:) :)
Yep, your right! crap! :o Can you translate it for us Aliena?

thanks for that, look forward to the rest

Thanks for doing the translation...was still ploughing thru the Italian in my laboured way !!!.. .....and as for the other 'auto' translation...well, I had to laugh !!!!..What gives with that...I have often tried to get something 'technical' translated and it is always jibberish....I'd have thought the latest technology would have been able to do better than that ....talking of which.....we have a notice on the beach at Pilone about phoning if you are in trouble in the sea and it says something like ' use your mobile phone to phone this number or get to the SURE and use a public phone.'..bit difficult if you are drowning methinks !!!! ...and do I have to buy a waterproof mobile now !!! ...could be the latest fashion accessory( can't spell myself this morning !!!)... Bless 'em !:D

Well done Aliena, you deserve a huge round of applause;) shhh can you hear it:rolleyes: seriously, that's brilliant

well done alinea, complimenti per l'ottima traduzione, solo piccole irregolarità che non è il caso di correggere

LOL, no blooming mention of the puppies though... darn it :D :D

My god we are all famous!!!! Well done Tingle woman, Paula and The Smiths for special mentions. :D

Oh ey, my heads been the size of Birkenhead all weekend telling everybody down our local:rolleyes:

a nice boost for the local italian community

looks like prices for those of you who have not bought will soon be going up.... any italian that reads about the " place to be and the well to do english will not be partial to letting their piece of land or house go that cheaply anymore

... in a sense an own goal for those that had hoped to buy while the market was still a bit quite.... but now the news seems to be out....

... i realise those in puglia or natives of regarded this as some sort of battle to even things out... but in reality not much was said of anything and more harm done than good....

....i can already hear sour grapes .... from those already there..... but i wouldnt want to be planning a house buying trip whilst this news is still hot in the italian mind... maybe let them cool their heels a bit before attempting to negotiate a house deal....

Well said John and if you wan to sell up and move to Puglia I have a few numbers ;) . My sister has moved to Abruzzo and it looks super.

Watched our nightly quiz show last night (l'Eredita...something like that...haven't got an Italian Radio times to check the name ;) )and one of the questions was ' which region spends the most on shoes and clothes ' ..and loads of regions were listed ...guess what the correct answer was ????.......PUGLIA  ...off to Ostuni today shopping to become a fashion icon !!!:D
Actually ...great TV show for learning Italian ...RAIUno just before 7pm...watch it every night !:)

find that very strange, given the north south divide,[money wise]
does that mean they spend nearly all there earnings on shoes and clothes?
or have the albanians set up a chain of aldi stores.

And they have all that cheap Albanian Labour for doing up our villas, crushing the grapes and making black dresses...
Have you heard the latest? I've just read an article in the local weekly rag.. with a circulation of 100,000,031 copies..

The whole of Campania is a no go area!

Toxic waste dumping everywhere.. braziers on every street corner.. camorra living next door to Albanians.. ladies of the night fighting with the pickpockets over the best spec.. the price of chestnuts has never been so high.. can't buy sfogliatelle for love nor money.. children under 7 glow in the dark.. property prices in total freefall.. and to top it all.. Clarke has moved in!

It's such a shame Naples is definitley NOT the place to be..

Terrible news.. simply terrible news.. ;)

:) :)
will you shut up....... you know what its like...you tell them its a no no,and

about to leave.... yes you as well albanian jack get a move on....

thats better... right lets load up them shoes...and put the prices up,there selling too well, must be underpriced...

Trains trains they dont have trains in Campania oh you mean mule trains, and not the shoe variety...:D
Trains trains they dont have trains in Campania oh you mean mule trains, and not the shoe variety...:D
we only have trains running one way.single no returns.
thats why you wil not get a train to run from puglia to campania.

any road heres a bit of history.
in the second world war, german troops arrived in my mothers town, demanding to know where the train line was.it was pionted out over
and over again, that there was no trainstation or train line for some 50km.
the germans, eventaully left still convinced that some how the locals had
hid them!

piont is.. in some map books, AA and michelin for sure, there is a road penned
in for construction, running from the a14 near poggio puglia down by san severo, lucera to candela and the a16. has been on map books since 1994,
and was to open in 2001.would have been of use to us saving maybe 35 miles
and through some interesting landscapes.
piont is. still not even started, locals seem to know little about the project.
and so i assume thats where all the money for extra shoes and clothes,
that the puglians have, has come from
