Sure this topic has come up more than once in the past. Have you done a site search? Should turn up more info for you.

We just completed on our purchase and I enquired with a number of UK insurers who were very helpful and gave me the peace of mind of having a UK insurer. However, the cost was very high - (£600 p.a. for Buildings €240k and Contents €15k, plus Public Liability).

When in Italy and completing the purchase, we went to a local broker and obtained equivalent cover for €200 p.a.

If you are buying in a seismic region, earthquake cover is not part of the standard policy (nor if purchased in th UK) and most domestic homeowners do not buy it. Cover can be obtained, subject to a prior survey. Not sure how much this cover costs though.

We insure through Andrew Copeland Insurance [url]http://www.fopdac.com/1115f.htm[/url] in the UK and that does cover us for earthquakes but I don't remember how much value we've put on the house, so I can't say how competitive their figures are. We pay about £400 p.a. +/- so less expensive than the UK cost you quoted but more than the €200 your Italian insurer. Touch wood we've never had to claim so I can't say how well they behave if something were to go wrong.

Unless someone tells us otherwise, we also found Andrew Copeland Insurance to be competitive and very user friendly.

may I suggest finding a local insurance shop. I find insurance much cheaper out in Italy as opposed to a company over in England insuring properties abroad.

I insure my place as a family home [not rented out] that is empty for the majority of the time

I arranged it through the Estate agent that I bought the house through

It covers Public Liability, Rebuilding [approx 100K Euros] and contents [say 10K] etc. - can't be more precise, the policy is in the house [hope it doesn't get burnt down!]

The insurer is GAN

The cost last year was about 85 Euros
