The latest edition of Italy magazine has many ads from Umbrian estate agents. Some of them I know, as we live on border between Umbria and Tuscany. Long term rental is a very good idea before you finally make a commitment, it may even be a long term alternative solution to purchasing: not committing your capital, which can earn a high interest rate in England and pay for the rent: not involved in the pain of ownweship: no worries about capital gains tax and capital transfer tax and not having to worry about Italian law of inheritence. Residential rental values as a percentage of purchase price is relatively low in Italy (anyway that is what we found when investigating the possibility of getting into long term lets), unless you are in the main cities!!! Alternatively, if you know the villages where you want to settle try and find their websites: they normally have commercial listings. Another good source of information is the local Chamber of commerce.
Good Luck!

Hello!
Well, that is just the idea I have as well - to rent to ensure I like living in Italy!
Although - I have been many times, I do not think that holidays are the same as living in a country!
Good luck - and hope it is as good for you as it will be for me!
Still needing to find churches and cathedrals in which to play! That is becoming nore difficult!

Welcome to the forum. hope somebody is able to help you. We are in Lazio so not much use, sorry. Think you are very wise coming over to rent first, that is the path we took ourselves. In our rental property is was easy to set up the internet access, just needed our codice fiscale and local computer shop dealt with it all for us.
