2118 healthcare costs in Italy

I am an american married to an Italian citizen. Though we currently reside in America, I am in the process of obtaining dual citizenship as an Italian citizen.

We would like to move to Italy permanently but I have one major concern that is preventing it. I have arthritis and am currently undergoing regular treatments which would be very expensive without insurance. I have been told that as an talian citizen I would qualify for the treatments for free or at least a much lower cost than in America.

I was hoping that someone out there who has dealt with this situation could give me some information.

My Italian is pretty good and I'm not really worried about finding employment after getting there. It's only the health issue that is preventing me from fulfilling my dream of living in what I consider to be the most beautiful country in the world.

I just need to make sure that during the time it takes me to find work there, my medical treatments will be covered.

I would greatly appreciate any information!!!!!

If you're an italian citizen or even if you'll remain us citizen, but with regoular residency in Italy (permesso di soggiorno), all the health care is free: medicines for main patholigies (i.e. you have to pay for aspirin, but not for cardiological, cancer, diabetics cares etc.), hospitals and so on.

don't you need to join some insurance scheme or other notaio in order to get free treatment - our residency is being held up at the moment because they want proof of medical insurance, which coming from England, we didn't think we would need

I am certain that all either of you need to do is to go to your local SSN /ASL with your PdiS and register, you can pay E388 approx and get the same care as an Italian citizen, they will take about 7% of your salary if you are working.
Howard,
I think most of your questions will be answered on the website www.expatsinitaly.com
Fiona,
I don't understand why you are being asked for insurance, I assume you are a EU citizen, therefore you can do as above or apply to the Pensions dept www.dwp.gov.uk (do a search on E106 and E121) for a E106 or E121 depending on your age.
If you do a search in this forum on E106 - look at 'be advised, cost of living' I think you will find most of your answers.
