Not quite sure how Ryanair work out their pricing system but at peak times, ie UK bank holidays and school hols they often charge as much, if not more, than the 'proper' airlines. With the latter, at least you are looked after if things go awry and not dumped to fend for yourself!
Relatives have flown with Lufthansa (via Munich) and with Alitalia (via Milan) to Ancona from both Manchester and Birmingham. Although there was a bit of hanging around they decided that was the lesser of 2 evils when compared with the drive to Stanstead. They have tended to pay about £230 return but on one occasion, from Birmingham it was less than £100! The further in advance you can book, the cheaper it tends to be. Can still get pretty pricey when a family is travelling, but may be worth a look, especially as you are based up north.
Good luck at Christmas - hope the IKEA raid & the drive over the mountains goes well.

I know you can't blame them - its only business - but they do seem to take the mick out of parents who can only go in school hols. We want to treat mates with kids to half term at our place and I don't much fancy transfers via Milan with a load of with 4 adults and a variety of nippers between 3 and 10..Its almost £1500 for the 9 of us at the mo - thats a bit too big a treat!
Think I'm going to wait and hedge my bets that Pescara might be cheaper.
Our xmas flights to Rome were a rare bargain in comparison.
I had a practise run to Nottingham Ikea at the weekend to check out what we want to get, hoping that the stuff will be 'disponibilità' on the Rome websites the day before we go. Hieronymous Bosch could not have devised a scene more hellish. Just hope the Italian xmas shoppers will have all started their journeys to their families on 24/12.
Will let you know how the trip from hell goes on my return. At least we are steeled for it!

Sort your prices out Ryanair.

Sometimes booking directly with Alitalia online is even cheaper and they used to offer an extra discount for booking at weekends (not sure if they still do this or not). For those dates the fares and taxes are less than £90 and they offer a choice of flights. If travelling with children, make sure you go through the correct procedure, it is easy to make the mistake of booking all adult tickets and therefore miss out on the child discount (something else not offered by Ryanair unless under 2's).
