On the download section of Google earth I noticed this
"Google Earth is a broadband, 3D application that not all computers can run.
1. Apple Macintosh computers are not supported at this time (but we are working on it).
2. Windows-based desktop PCs older than 4 years old may not be able to run it.
3. Windows-based notebook PCs older than 2 years old may not be able to run it."
I think this may be why I am unable to download Google Earth even though I have broadband.
Google Earth for Macs and others

Sadly the real thing is not yet available for us Mac users. However, you can select map from the Google options page - click on satellite and then navigate your way from England to Italy. Certainly in Liguria a huge stretch along the coast and into the primi collini is available in great detail.

Does anyone think that Luni & Liguria are hi-res due to La Spezia? I get the suspicion that the need for hi-res satellite images of a naval port & centre of underwater weapons research may have bumped it up the list!

I think your right about areas of military interest being more covered, Sardinia has a number of US and NATO military bases and a missile testing ground unfortunately and most of the island is hires. See if you can spot my beach / diving bookmarks on the south coast.
I found a really interesting spot of Highres in the middle of the north african desert (Just one red square) see if you can find it.
I just love some of the bookmark comments people make.
